FIFTY YEARS AGO
AMBITIONS OF RUSSIA The ambitions of Russia in the Balkans wore causing considerable anxiety in Europe half a century ago, as can bo seen from tho following extract from the New Zealand Herald of January 20, 1888: "The military officials at Berlin have proved that the Russians on the frontier greatly exceed in numbers the German and Austrian forces combined. The Emperor Wilhelm has assured the Red Cross Societies that he hopes peace will be preserved. The Austrians are greatly incensed at the German official press suggesting that peace can only be maintained by Austria conceding the demands of Russia. The Sultan of Turkey has issued orders to have the defences of Adrianople completed immediately."
