DEEP-SEA FISHING

BAY OF ISLANDS SPORT 530L8. BLACK MARLIN CAUGHT CAVALLI ISLANDS IN BOUNDS [by telegraph —own correspondent] RUSSELL. Monday Good sport was experienced by deepsea fishermen in the Bay of Islands during the week-end. There was a heavy swell running on Saturday and rain fell in the evening, but after that conditions rapidly improved. Fishing from the launch Alma G. 11. on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. H. E. Vail, of Western Australia!, caught a black marlin weighing 53010. A mako shark weighing 2521b. offered strong resistance before being caught by Mb. Miles J. Cassidy, of Auckland, from the launch Reliance. The fish, which fought for two hours, leapt from the water si* times. Other catches made during the weekend were: —Striped marlin: 2811b., from the Lorna Doonc. by Mr. E. li. Morrison, British Columbia; 2511b., from the Alma G., by Mr. E. D. Blundell, Wellington. Mako sharks: 3811b., from the Valhalla, by Mr. W. Craig, Auckland; 2551b., from tho Valhalla, by Mr. L. Bird, Whangarei. ' Advico has been received from tho Minister ol Marine, the Hon. P. Eraser, by the secretary of the Bay of Islands Swordlish and Mako Shark Club, Mr. L. Hewitt, that the extreme limit for vessels engaged in deepsea sport fishing has been extended north to Grcnvill Point, 28 miles north of Cape Brett. The Cavalli Islands, hitherto out of bounds for big-game fishing, are now included in the open area.
