YOUNG STOWAWAYS

VOYAGE FROM SYDNEY DESIRE TO FIND WORK COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS The two stowawayß brought to Auckland from Sydney by the Wanganella on Friday, Kenneth Wijliam Le Sueur, baker's apprentice, aged 17, and Maurice Archibald Donald Carlisle, labourer, aged 17, were charged with the offence in the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M. Both pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector Fox said the accused surrendered themselves to the ship's officers two hours after the Wanganella left Sydney, and were arrested on the ship's arrival at Auckland. It was probable their parents were not aware of their whereabouts, as the notes they left did not indicate that they had decided to try their luck in finding employment in New Zealand.

"The shipping company is not prepared to take the youths back to Australia, not even although they have offered to work their passages," continued Mr. Fox. "The Customs Department does not intend to take action. In many cases stowaways are undesirable persons, but the accused appear to be decent young fellows who left home to find employment. They now want to return, and it is desirable that they should be remanded until communication has been made with their parents." In reply to the magistrate, the accused said they landed in New Zealand with 4s 3d and 5s respectively in their possession. "I don't know how you are going to get back," said the magistrate. "You must first pay your fare from Sydney. If you were older I would have to send .you to prison." The accused were remanded in the custody of the Salvation Army until January 21. The police were ordered to communicate with the accuseds' parents.
