HOLIDAY GAMES

SUBURBAN INNOVATION MOUNT ALBERT CHILDREN ENJOYMENT OF LEISURE Determined to show that they coidd enjoy their holidays, although they were not able to visit the beaches or country, about 100 children of the Mount Albert district gathered in Fowlds Park yesterday afternoon, to take part in playground activities organised by the Mount Albert branch of the Community Sunshine Association. Mr. Alexander Macgregor supervised the games for the association.

Although it was the first time such activities had been extended to a suburban district, the children entered wholeheartedly into the games, and, in spite of the fact that many of them were not previously acquainted, enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Tho games will be held every afternoon between 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock. Acting for Themselves

"The effort is wholly to get them to act for themselves," said Mr. Macgregor yesterday. "There will be a certain amount of organisation, but each day they will be required to arrange part of the time for themselves. The thought behind the scheme is that with so much leisure time it is essential that the children should learn how to spend it."

Appreciation of the assistance the Mount Albert Borough Council had given was expressed by Mr. Macgregor. The council had marked out cricket grounds and tennis courts, and had been most encouraging and helpful. Community Singing and Stories

The Sunshine Association and school committees b.ad supplied material for the games, but the children were encouraged to bring their own materials and musical instruments, to supply music for folk dancing. During the latter parts of the afternoon they will take part in community singing and listen to stories in the shade of the trees.

Mr. Macgregor said Fowlds Park, open to the winds, yet with ample protection from the sun if it proved too strong, was ideal for the purpose. So that parents should have n6 fear of their children suffering from any injury, or the effects of the hot weather, two members of the nursing division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade would bo at the park every afternoon.
