WOODVILLE WORK

MAESTRO SPRINTS WELL NEW PUPILS FOR F. W. DAVIS CORONATION JOINS TEAM [from our own* correspondent] WOODVILLE, Wednesday The tracks at Woodville were again in perfect order yesterday and fast work was distributed between the plough and the outside of the course proper. On the course, Mahita went surprisingly well to finish a couple of lengths in front of Aube in 51 2-ss. Mahita is a six-year-old novice by Psychology from Lady Ainsfie and is to make his first appearance at Woodville. The unnamed Thoniond gelding displayed his usual speed by getting to the end of five furlongs in 1.3 3-ss. He is another promising novice who should bo seen at the local meeting. The hurdler Maliala worked very freely over a round on the plough, the last half in 545. This full-sister to Mata Hari looks in nice order and should race well at Otaki. The Hunting Song gelding Gold Ballad was finishing well at the end of lialf a mile on the plough in 535. He is a solid-looking >ort from Gisborne and looks like proving useful. Golden Memory and Lucky Charm finished on terms at the cud of half a mile in 51 2-ss,

Maestro and Gaelic Song galloped four furlongs 011 tho plough in 50 l-os, tho former doing the better. Maestro is very well. Tho two-year-old Cherry Plum registered 52s for half a mile on the plough. Although a big, overgrown colt, this son of Beau Pere hits out well. Over three furlongs Waterproof, a gelding by Tidal, recorded 39 2-ss. Francis Drake came home strongly the last half on the plough in 545. He appears to have overcome his soreness and lias been entered for the second day at Woodville.

Courtcraft did a couple of rounds at steady pace 011 the plough. The two-year-old Sports Coat, who has been showing signs of lameness, has been turned out until the autumn. Relative rejoined F. W. Davis' team after racing the first day at Feilding. The Limond —Jewel of Asia colt Coronation also joined the stable this week.

NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE

TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Mr. J. Ross recently lost Volition after an accident. Thg horse was in a section and staked himself so severely that his destruction was ordered. Lustral has had a good deal of racing for one win, a high-weight handicap at Opaki, but he has been working so well at Trentham lately that he may shortly add to his record. Ho may bo given another opportunity at Otaki; He is by Tidal from Asterism, by Lord Quex, and a half-brother to Foreign Star.

On a number of occasions. Sir Hugh has not run up to the ability he has shown on the track, but performed generously in the Highweight Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday and outclassed tho field. He recently came into the possession of Mr. B. L Ede, and it Svas his first success for his new owner. • ; ' , ... •. l

Siraee's only success this season was in the Vallance Memorial Handicap at the Masterton October meeting, but he has shown consistently good form in his work. At Trenthani on Saturday, he galloped seyeii furlongs with Good Sun in 1.30. Sunee, with 8.9, will be ridden in the Nikitini Memorial Stakes at Otaki by S. Wilson.

With her apprentice rider's allowance,- Queen of Song carried only 7.12 in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton and paid a good dividend when she won from Rebel Lad. It was a luxurious weight compared with some she had carried in the past two years, both in. Now Zealand and Australia, and in lier present form she should be still capable of winning in her turn.

By his success in the Kiwi tea Handicap at Feilding, Airing brought his record for two and a-half seasons' racing to eight wins and ten times placed. He was bred by Mrs. M. A. Perry, Taradale, and was bought at the yearling sales in 1932 for 20 guineas by Mr. F. Bristol. He was not raced until lie was five years old, but he lias made an adequate" return for his long period of idleness.

While exercising 011 the Washdyke track last week, Night-form broke a leg and was destroyed. Formerly trained by E. J. Ellis, he was in P. T. Hogan's stable latterly. Nightform twice won the Wainiate Cup, also races of some value at Wingatui, Riverton and Orari. He was named in the mistaken idea that his sire was Night Raid, but ha was entered in the Stud Book as having been bred by Polazel from Pollyform, by Boniform.

NATIONAL YEARLING SALES CATALOGUE FOR JANUARY An attractive catalogue has been arranged for the National Yearling Sales at Trentham in January and no fewer than 170 lots are to be offered. The largest offering of 12 comes from Mr. G. M. Currie's Koatanui. stud, Kai Iwi, where many high-class winners have been bred. The lots comprise three colts and three fillies by the defunct Limond, two colts and two fillies by the young sire Ringmaster, and a colt and a filly by Posterity. Mr. T. H. Lowrv, Okawa, Hastings, is represented by 10 lots; Mr. F. 13. Donnelly, Flaxmere, Hastings, nine; and Mr. A. E. Preston, West Derby stud, Ohau, by eight.
