THE CENTENNIAL
AUCKLAND EXPENSES SALARY OF SECRETARY LOCAL BODY DISCUSSION The appointment of the permanent secretary to the Auckland Provincial Centennial Committee was briefly discussed by the Devonport Borough Council last night, when it was asked to approve of a levy of £94 17s 6d toward organising expenses. The sum had been allocated as the Devonport council's share of £2500 to be obtained from contributions by local bodies to assist in the working expenses of the centennial committee for the first year. Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones said the matter should bo investigated carefully and ho suggested that the members of the council should bo given time to consider the centennial committee's report. Ho thought tho sum of £I3OO mentioned in the report for office expenses was too high. "I understand that Mr. J. S. Brigham, formerly town clerk at Auckland, has been appointed secretary at a salary of £SOO and that opposition is likely to be raised to the appointment," Mr. Hobbs-Jones said. "There is nothing in the report to say that if the money is not spent we will be charged pro rata." The Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, said he agreed with Mr. Hobbs-Jones that the salary was excessive. The council decided to hold the matter over until members had had an opportunity of persuing the report.
