NEW HOSTEL
LAKE WAIKAREMOANA TOURIST DEPARTMENT'S PLAN SITE NEAR ANIWANIWA FALLS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] GISBORNE, Tuesday The fact that plans are in the course of preparation for the erection at Waikareinoana of a hostel which will be the most up-to-date in the Dominion was revealed by Mr. L. J. Schmitt, general manager of the Tourist Department, following a hurried visit to the lake in company with other officials of the department. Mr. Schmitt disclosed also that the present site of Lake House will not be used, it having been decided to take advantage of a larger area of flat land near Aniwaniwa Falls, which will allow ample scope for future expansion and also for the provision of amenities for guests. Mr. Schmitt said the plans would bo completed shortly, and, although it had been definitely decided to go on with the new building, in the meantime extra accommodation of a temporary nature would be provided at Lake House in order to cope with the season's rush of visitors. It was clear, he said, that Waikaremoana was destined to become most popular as a tourist resort, and in designing the new hostel the department was looking years ahead. The building would be of the most modern design and in keeping with its beautiful surroundings. One of the drawbacks of the present building was that no facilities were provided for the entertainment of guests in the evenings, but this would be fully provided for in the new hostel. The new site which has been selected will give a view of the lake which it is claimed will equal that obtained from Lake House, and will have the additional advantage of giving ample room.
