STREET APPEAL

FOUR. ORGANISATIONS LIFE-SAVING WORK VALUABLE SERVICE GIVEN A combined street appeal in aid of the funds of the Itoyal Life Saving Society, the Surf Life Saving Association. the Victoria League and the Navy League, will he held to-day. Approximately 250 boxes will be in use and collectors will be on the streets from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The money raised will bo divided equally between th<' four organisations.

Ail idea of the excellent work performed by the life saving societies may be formed from the fact that in the Auckland Province 110 rescues were effected last season, an increase ol 2(5 on the number for the previous period, while first-aid was rendered in 80 cases. In addition to this fine record the J {oval Life Saving Society carries out much valuable educative work, particularly among schoolchildren, and the Surf Life Saving Association patrols beaches and gives numerous demonstrations on the practical aspects of saving people from drowning. Many beaches arc still not patrolled and it is stressed that unless sufficient funds are forthcoming the life saving societies cannot extend then work." Equipment is supplied by the. societies and money is also necessary for this purpose. It is hoped, in \ie\\ of the programmes mapped out lor this season, that the Auckland public will respond generously to the appeal. The activities of the Victoria League and the Nav.v League are of value in strengthening the ties ol Empire, the former working to effect a closer union between Britain and the Dominions and caring for the graves of soldiers and others who rendered service to the Empire, while the Navy League exists mainlv to promote complete naval protection for the Empire in the cause of peace.
