INDUSTRIAL FILMS

MANUFACTURE OF COCOA A remarkable series of films, illustrating all the stages of production, manufacture and distribution associated with tho chocolate and cocoa industry, was shown at a private screening in the Tivoli Theatre on Saturday morning arranged by Cadburv, Fry, Hudson, Limited. Lacking the*blatant propaganda that is often contained in trade pictures, the films dealt with a variety of subjects in a novel and interesting manner. The care that is taken in securing only tho best cocoa beans and other raw materials for the vast Cadbury works at Bournoville, England, was shown in two films 1 depicting operations on the plantations in Trinidad and on the Gold Coast of Africa. Of particular merit was the picture on Trinidad, which was in teclinicolour, but both had their interest enhanced by providing an insight into the life and customs of the natives in the two countries. Tho huge scale and varied naturo of the activities within the famous factories at Bourneville, set amid most beautiful surroundings, were well illustrated in other films. These led a tour of inspection through innumerable . departments showing the sorting of raw materials, the painstaking tests for purity, the mixing of chocolate, tho packing and labelling processes, ami the distribution of tho products. They also indicated the congenial conditions under which the thousands of employees of the firm work and spend their leisure. The programme was concluded with a charming romantic comedy in which an unknown composer and his sweetheart won "a song-writing contest with the piece "Sweets for my Sweetie," the sweets, of course, being Cadbury's.
