INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

New Lynn.—The institute held its monthly meeting recently. Mrs. Stacey presided. An interesting travel talk 011 Spanish missions in California was given by Mrs. Chambers. While the competitions were being judged Mrs. Wilson gave two items on the mouth organ. Winners of the competitions were: —Decorated vase of flowers, Mrs. Boler, 1; Mrs. Boler, 2; Mrs. Reid, 3. Madeira cake, Mrs. Reid, 1; Mrs. Boler, 2. Dressed doll, Mrs. Morrison, 1; Mrs. Teede, 2; Mrs. Boler, 13. A competition basket was won by Mrs. .Briggs. A letter was read by Mrs. White from a link institute in England. Toys and picture books, etc., were brought by members to be sent to the children at Makogai Island. The hostesses were Mrs. Whittam, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Southern, Mrs. Sinclair and Mrs. Stubbins.

Marauiar.ua-Kopuku. —The institute celebrated the first birthday recently. There was a large attendance of members and -friends from neighbouring institutes. A play, "The Bride," was performed by members of the dramatic circle, and community singing was'enjoyed. Afternoon tea was served. Tho members presented tho president, Mrs. Drake, and Mrs. McElwain with an engraved institute teaspoon each. The first baby of the institute was also presented with a silver teaspoon. Mrs. Stokes won tho "ladder" competition and Mrs. Fiulnyso.n the prize for the best bloom. Mrs. McElwain gave a short address.

Hangatiki.—About 200 people attended the sixth birthday of the Hangatiki institute. Tho president, Mrs. Pettigrcw, assisted by the vicepresident, Mrs. Downard, received the guests, among whom were ]\lrs. Robson, late president of tho Waikato federation, and Mrs. Bulwell, president of tlio King Country federation. An enjoyable programme was contributed by Mrs. Oatridge, Mrs. O'Connell, members of the Maori Women's Institute, Mrs. G. Reid, Miss MoPhillips (Otorolianga), members of the To Kuiti Women's Division, Mrs; Downard and Mrs. Pettigrew. After the cutting of the birthday cake, shoulder sprays wero presented to three former presidents and a bouquet to the president. Jubilee. —Mrs. Hogarth presided at a recent meeting of tho institute. A report of the bi-annual conference was presented by tho delegate. Mrs. Monds. A good response was made to the appeal for gifts for tho Makogai leper station. Winners of competitions for tho month were as follows:—Best arranged vase of flowers, Mrs. Gibson, 1; Mrs. Nelson, 2. Jar dried apricot jam: Mrs. Maclean, 1; Mrs. Terry, 2. A demonstration of dargenna work was given by Mrs. Bowler, and Mrs. Wilson recited. The trading table was in charge of Mrs. Terry. Hostesses were Mesdames O'Brien, Pitman, Thompson, Monds and Wilson.
