FINAL GALLOPS

HORSES AT BICCARTON

MANY CUP CANDIDATES OUT WILD CHASE IMPRESSIVE HONOURS TO SILVER STREAK [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCII, Thursday Pleasant conditions prevailed for the final cup meeting gallops at Riccarton to-day. The weather was threatening from the south, but rain is not expected for the week-end. The outside of the course proper and the plough tracks were available for fust work, the latter again being in greater favour. It was slow early, owing to its having been watered a few hours beforo work began, but it was much faster for late workers. On the plough, the first of the New Zealand Cup candidates to gallop was Wild Chase, who went away from the mile and a-quarter post with Great Bramble as a mate. When the latter was pulled off at the five furlongs, Mulatto joined in. Wild Chase covered the distance in 2.10, taking 51 4-5s for tho first half-mile and 1.31 2-5 for seven furlongs. This was a really good gallop, compared with those of later, and Wild Chase will have to be seriously regarded in Saturday's event, especially if rain should fall in the meantime. Cerne Abbas, Argentic and lingo were once more associated, covering a mile a lid'" a-quarter in 2.1.1, the last mile in 1.45 and the last three furlongs in 40s. Argentic again shaded Cerne Abbas at tho finish, with Enge two lengths away. Queen of Song Works Well Cottingham, Queen of Song and Small lio.v wore companions in a similar task in 2.10, the last mile in 1.44 3-5, six furlongs in 1.18 1-5, and the final three in 395. Cottingham finished slightly in front of Queen of Song, but tho latter was overhauling him and appeared to be going the better. Small Boy was a length away and seemod to bo doing his best. Boomerang, Might and Cuddle were to have galloped over the same ground, but, owing to Cuddle giving trouble, the trio went off at intervals as named and they completed the task in tho same order, with Boomerang just clear of Might and Cuddle, who had to make up a good deal of ground, close up. This gallop was not timed from the tenfurlong post and Boomerang ran tho last mile in 1.44 1-5, the first half in sls. All three did very useful work, Cuddle's effort especially being creditable. Much interest centred on the tbree-vear-old rivals, Royal Chief and Smoko Screen, who raced abreast over a mile in 1.43, the last six furlongs in 1.17 1-5 and the last three in 39 l-ss. They were sent out to keep together and although both were ridden in the straight, there was no suggestion of a fighting finish. The meeting between this pair in the Derby will bo ono of the attractions of Cup Week. Rebel Lad finished slightly in front of Sovereign Lady, with a length to Sunce, after completing a mile in 1.43 3-5, the first half occupying 50 3-ss. All three should fare well during tho meeting. Red Sun shaped well for a hurdler by running a mile and a-quarter in 2.12, the last half in 53 2-ss. Ho looks in excellent order. A Brilliant Mile

Easily the best mile gallop of tho morning was again credited to Silver Streak, who, with Pol Roger as a mate for part of the journey, ran the distance in 1.39 4-5, the last three in 38 4-ss. A rider has not been engaged for him in the cup, in which he may be depended upon to make a bold showing. However, all his good gallops at Riccarton have been on tho plough and different results may bo forthcoming on a firm grass track. Lazybones and Nightdress went well over seven furlongs in 1.30, the last three in 395. This time was beaten after the interval by Drink Up and Clubman, who with their Apprentice Handicap riders, recorded 1.29 4-5, the first three in 35 2-5s and the first four in 48 4-ss. Milford and Trebleiiek completed the journey in 1.31 2-5, the last, three in 395. There were several smart six-furlong tasks, the best being that of Sir Hugh, who easily beat Happy Night in 1.15 3-5, the second three in 395. Swordstick beat Card Sharper by four lengths in 1.16 3-ss, the second three in 39 2-ss. Wine Card was in front of Rockingham jn 1.17 4-5. Triune and Parquet beat Dollar Prince in 1.17 2-5. Rosscau ind Top Row recorded 1.17 1-5. Paper .Vote took 1.18, Ben Braggie 1.18 3-5, Waitaka and Moonrakei* 1.18 2-6, Contract. 1.17 2-5, while Alunga easily accounted for Kindlv in 1.17 2-5.

Lowenberg and Friesiand, also Great Star, were given a working gallop over seven furlongs. Petersham beats Dictate Petersham was a length in front of Dictate after reeling off half a mile in 495. Rebel Chief went 51 3-ss, Haughty Winner 525, Maroha 03s, and Tarboe 5 In.. Davolo and Colombo, after long, slow work,, sprinted two furlongs down the straight Gold Boy and Supejrex were schooled over the brush hurdles and later ran six furlongs in 1.20 2-5. Fiord and Solwit strode over a mile in 1'.50. Redolent and Royal Grafton registered 1.47. Concertpitch did an easy five furlongs in 1.7. On the course proper, Mob Rule covered a mile in 1.44. Trench Fight, who is to race on the second day, ran seven furlongs in 1.32 4-5, Miracle and Sunbeam went five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, finishing together. The two-year-olds Taurangi, Peerless, Protector and Rakahanga moved off together from the half-mile barrier at tho top of the straight; although they could not be timed, the pace seemed to be on. Taurangi finished clear of Peerless, who was well in the rear ,early, with the other pair together. Protector did not (shape very satisfactorily and evidently ho has not recovered from his trouble. Smart Five by Brunhild Gay Son and Raebum ran half a mile round tho home bend in 48 4-ss, the former being three-quarters of a length in front at the post. This was a good sprint on the part of Raebum, who is likely to be in evidence in one ,of the handicap events. Brunhild beat Ardmavle over five furlongs in 1.2 2-5, the last four in 50s. The Crooner went well in covering a mile in 1.42 2-5, the first four in 50 2-ss. John Charles strode over a mile in 1.50. Gaysomc beat Rebel Queen over six furlongs in 1.19. Nolana, assisted by Patuma, took 1.20 3-5, Silver Sight and Royal Amphora followed in 1.20, and Guinea Kowl took 119 2-5. Big Dook and Lickcm traversed seven furlongs comfortably in 1.31 1-5. Epic beat Phalanx over live furlongs in 1.4 4-5, Godfrey took 52 2-5s lor half a mile. 4 TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB ENTRIES AND PAYMENTS Nominations for all handicap events at .the Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, to be held at Ellerslio on November 27 and 29, close with the secretary, Mr. R- A.
