SCHOOL GROUNDS

MANY IMPROVEMENTS PUBLIC WORKS ACTIVITY SCHEMES IN AUCKLAND One of the busiest tasks of 111 n Public Works Department at present is provided by improvements to school grounds throughout (lie Auckland Province. The department has been engaged on these works for some time. The largest undertaking is at the New Lynn school, while an extensive scheme has been commenced at the new school at Orakei, the site of the Government housing scheme in Auckland. Work is also in progress at the Takapuna Grammar School, where a. new playing field is being laid out, and at the Richmond Road Hoys' Home, and Mount Albert and Newmarket schools. Similar .progress is being made at a number of schools in the country districts.

Tho department's officers aro also busily engaged in the preparation of plans for submission to the head office, Wellington, for further work at many of tin; remaining schools in the Auckland Province. Plans have been completed for a new school playground at Morningside, and improvements at Westmore, Ponsonby and Dominion Road.

Commenting on a complaint from the school committee at To Aroha that urgent work to its playground had not been undertaken by the Public Works Department in spite of promises to commence at the beginning of October, the secretary of the Auckland Education Board stated yesterday that he had received advice that the department had been authorised on October 28 to proceed with the scheme.
