GAMBLING ON WHARVES
'THREE MEN BEFORE COURT MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINES Charged with playing a game of chance, crown and anchor, on Central Wharf 011 Wednesday, three men appeared before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. The accused, James Leslie Watkins, aged 24, Cecil William Gibbs, aged 34, and William Henry Edward Burnhani j Soutter, aged 32, pleaded guilty. | Detective - Sergeant McHugh said I gambling on the wharves had created a nuisance for some time past. Jt took place ivhere the call for labour was held and caused an obstruction. Complaints had come from both the employers and the wharf labourers. The majority of those concerned were not wharf labourers in the strict sense but were casual workers, most of whom went to the wharves specially to gamble. A number of other men would be brought before the Court at a later date on similar charges. The magistrate imposed fines of JL'l each.
