CHRISTIANITY AND SOCIALISM

Sir, —Mr. 11. C. Simmons is on tho right track while he discovers that social justice originates in Christianity. But a little examination of socialistic practice (in Russia, or in Mexico), should show him that unjust methods of translating the Christian ethic into economic laws do constitute a violent opposition to Christianity. Here is one fundamental opposition: —The Christian teaching. concerning property is that every man lias the right—the inalienable right—to enjoy the possession of private property, including land properly used; whereas, tho initial doctrine of socialism denies that right. And so, in many more practices of socialistic rulers. To conclude, if anvone doubts that " modern " Christianity stands for the social justice demanded by Christ, let him read the explicit pronouncements contained in " Rerum Novarum " and " Quadrigesimo Anno," two of the many papal encyclicals published in recent years. Hugh McHaigh.
