BOROUGH DRAINAGE PLANS EXPENDITURE ON PORT ROAD [froji our own correspondent] TVHANG.tREI, Tuesday Proposals involving a total expenditure of £21,059 for storm water drainage and improvements to the sewerage system were submitted to the Whangarei Borough Council-at its meeting last evening by the engineer, Mr. H. •W. Cormack. The engineer's report gave details of plans for proposed storm water drainage in the northern end of the town involving an expenditure of £12,059, and also proposals for storm water disposal in other parts of the borough involving a total expenditure of £7IOO, including £3500 for drainage in the business area. < Plans for improvements to the sewerage system are for the removal of objectionable features of the existing reticulation caused by the overloading of the sewers by storm water. The cost is estimated at £I6OO. The chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. R. S. Finch, stated there were several parts of the town not covered by the report, and he considered they should be provided for. On his suggestion, it was decided that the engineer submit plans ana estimates covering the whole of the borough in regard to storm water drainage, and that a special meeting of the council be called to consider the proposals. The Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, reported that on October 12 tho council had been invited by the Whangarci County Council to take part in a conference with the Whangarei Harbour Board to consider a further contribution of £-100 by the three local bodies concerned toward tho cost of metalling the PortWhangarei Road, the Government having olfered £SOO toward the total cost of £I2OO. As there was no opportunity to consult tho wishes of the council, he put the question to the Works Committee, which decided against a further contribution, as the council had spent over £2OOO. The committee's action was endorsed. The council decided to call appliestioiis for a building, drainage and plumbing inspector at a commencing salary of £320 per annum, rising by annual increments to £350 per annum, c.
