INTER-CITY RIVALRY
MAYORS' GOOD FEELING COMPLIMENTS TO AUCKLAND Jocular remarks about their recent press controversy over ocean steamer and air services were made by the Mayors of Auckland and Wellington. Sir Ernest Davis and Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, respectively, at the meeting held last night regarding the Centennial Exhibition. 111 opening his address to the meeting, Mr. Hislop mentioned that he had flown up from Wellington that afternoon and after only three hours in the air he had found himself within sight of the shining waters of the Waitemata. (Laughter.) "You may wonder why I mention it," he continued. "I do so beeauso it shows that aviation brings us closer together. I hope that it means easy and quick contact between Auckland and Wellington." Mr. Hislop added that immediately on his arrival he had been shown a cartoon in that morning's Hekai.d, but that did not diminish his hope. He was glad to have an opportunity of visiting the not only great but also beauti-fully-situated city and harbour of Auckland. (More laughter.) At a later stage Sir Ernest Davis assured the meeting that there had been not the least personal feeling in tho controversy. " 1 am sorry that you did not take an aeroplane tour of our harbour and gulf," he remarked to Mr. Hislop. " Then you would havo understood what 1 meant in what I said about them."
