RESEARCH IN ENGLAND
NEW ZEALAND STUDENT FUNGAL DISEASES IN PLANTS Research in connection- -with fungal diseases of plants is being undertaken at the Imperial College of Science, South Kensington, London, by Mr. G. T. S. Baylis, M.Sc., of Auckland, who left New Zealand in August of last year with a Post-Graduate Scholarship in botany. The main problem upon which Mr. Baylis is engaged is concerned with a destructive disease of peas which causes heavy losses to commercial peagrowers in England, and it is hoped that as a result of his investigations some means of grappling with the post will be found. Mr. Baylis is also studying at "the John Innes Horticultural Institution, where he went to become acquainted with the methods of research in use there.
Mr. Baylis had a brilliant scholastic career in New Zealand. In 1931 he was dux of the Takapuna Grammar School, and while at Auckland University College held the Sir George Grey Scholarship in science,- the Duffus Lubecki Research Scholarship and a University Scholarship in botany. Mr. Baylis hopes on obtaining his degree of Doctor of Philosophy to return to New Zealand.
