Then rub over with a damp clean cloth and let it dry in an airy place. Rhubarb Wine "Rhubarb" (Taumarunui) would like a recipe for rhubarb wine to be ready for drinking at New Year. She does not want a recipe which requires working in a cask all the time, but one which can be bottled down. Cleaning Vulcanite "Thankful." —Rub with a little methylated spirits, or with methylated spirits mixed with a third as much ammonia. If this fails mix some sulphuric acid with about five times as much water and scrub the stem well with this, using a soft brush. Then wash well with.soap and water. Coconut Biscuits C.IT. sends in the following recipe:— Ingredients: Jib. flour, Jib. coconut, -Jib. butter or dripping, J teaspoonful baking powder, pinch of salt, Jib. sugar. Cream butter and sugar, add beaten egg, then flour and coconut mixed with powder and salt. Roll into small pieces and press flat. Cook in moderate oven. Sponge Sandwich Beat 3 eggs and 41b. sugar for 20 minutes, then sift in gradually }lb. flour to which J teaspoonful baking powder has been added, stirring all the time. Divide in two portions and place at once in well greased and floured baking tins. Bake in a hot ovon for about 10 minutes. Date and Nut Loaf "Helpless" (Waikato).—The following recipe is sent by C.M.H. (Matalniru): — One cup dates soaked in one cup boiling water with, one teaspoonful soda. Beat together ilb. butter with J breakfast cupful sugar and vanilla to taste. Add 0110 egg, then two breakfast cupsful flour and one teaspoonful baking powder. Add alternately with date mixture and lastly add J cup walnuts. Bake one hour, nice and moist. Lemon Shredded Marmalade C.H. (Hamilton East) sends the following recipe, asked for last week: — To every pound of finely cut lemons add 3 pints cold water and stand overnight. Then boil for one hour and stand till next day. Measure, and to every pint add IJlb. sugar (or brewers' crystals). Boil till it jellies (about one hour). The samo recipe is equally good for orange marmalade. To every (5 oranges add one lemon. Other recipes will be sent direct to the inquirer. lodine Stains "Wellwisher" (Walton) writes to say that she recently spilt iodine on a white bedspread and removed it by making a paste of cream of tartar and leavmg it

on the stain for several hours. Put a cloth under the runner and the stain will go through. "Interested Reader" writes to say that she discovered accidentally a method of removing iodine stains. She strained the potatoes into the sink in which the stained runner was lying and the stains immediately disappeared. Short Pastry For Tarts Mix half a teaspoonful baking powder with Jib. flour, one tablespoonful of sugar and a pinch of salt. Then rub into it well 5 ounces butter. Moisten with a little milk to make a stiff dough, give it a light knead and roll out. Brush with the white of an egg and bake a nice light golden brown. Then fill with the filling desired and bake again until this is set. Ice Cream Wafers Beat two tablespoonsful of butter to a cream and beat it again, till well mixed, with two tablespoonsful powdered loaf sugar. Work into this gradually one cup flour and one teaspoonful lemon juice. When all is well mixed, take pieces the size of a walnut and, having your wafer irons (or waffle irons would do) well heated and rubbed over inside with butter, put the pieces in the irons, press tightly closed and bake till a very delicate tint of brown. In a moderate oven this will take four to five minutes for each wafer. Lemon Beer "Anxious." Peel three lemons, squeeze out the juice and strain it. Put peel and juice in a pan with one ounce cream of tartar and 2Jlbs. loaf sugar. Pour over this three gallons boiling water and let stand till just warm. Then stir in well two tablespoonsful fresh brewers' yeast (or two teaspoonsful compressed yeast). Let stand in a warm place or near a fire for 12 hours, covered with a cloth. After this period skim off all scum and froth, pour off carefully from the sediment and bottle at once, ticing down the corks securely. Let stand three days and it is then ready for use. Bleaching Sugar Bags A query from the Awarua V omen's Institute is answered as follows; Damp the bags well and hang in a box or barrel, the mouth of which is covered with a thick rug or sack, and in the bottom of the barrel place a tray of hot embers well sprinkled with sulphur. Leave for a few hours and then give the bags a good rinse in soapy water. If two to three hours is not enough replenish the embers and leave as long as necessary. To remove the brand marks, boil for an hour or two in water to which plenty of washing soda has been added. Rub and scrub after the boiling and the marks should disappear.
