CATHEDRAL PLAN

SYNOD DISCUSSION COMMENDATION OF SCHEME appeal for support A resolution urging that synod should "commend the cathedral project to all men and women of good will thioughout the diocese in order that the diocese may proceed with the building of a cathedral on the site' set apart by Hi shop G. A, Selwyn, and thereby avail itself of the generous benefaction of tho late .Miss Mina I'ait Horton" was introduced at the meeting of the Auckland Synod last night by the Rev. R. G. Coats. The synod adjourned before Mr. Coats concluded speaking to the motion and a general discussion will bo hold this afternoon.

.Mr. Coats said a cathedral in Auckland had been the vision of Bishop Selwyn, and the late Miss Horton had been influenced by a desire to see that vision come true. Miss Horton had laid down certain conditions and if it was desired to take advantage of those conditions action must be taken immediately.

The special cathedral committee was working hard toward carrying the project forward, Mr. Coats said, fho architectural competition stipulated in the will could not. be hastened, however, and .decisions had also to be made as to how much could bo spent on the entire cathedral and on the first portion to be erected.

Mr. Coats paid a tribute to the work of Archbishop Averill and Archdeacon Simkin 111 preparing for the project and urged that the present opportunity to provide the cathedral should be availed of. "It will ho a scandalous disgrace if wo do not do so," he added. The approaching jubilee of Auckland and of Bishop Selwyn mado it appropriate that the work should bo pressed on, Mr. Coats said. Others who were not members of the Anglican communion were desirous that a cathedral should bo built. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, had expressed a desire to do everything possible in connection with the plan and wished to call a meeting of citizens at the Town Hall with the object of co-operating with tho Church.
