AVONDALE CLUB

OCTOBER MEETING TO-MORROW'S OPENING PROSPECTS IN CHIEF EVENTS

BY ARCHER

Satisfactory acceptances have been received for the opening day of the Avondale Jockey Club's second spring meeting to-morrow and the evenlybalanced fields should provide some interesting racing. The course is in good order, and, unless there is rain, the going is likely to bo fast. The betting will bo under tho single-pool system and the first race, tho Trial Stakes, is timed to start at 12 noon. Other start; ing times are as follows: —12.-12,Bangi-toto Hurdles; 1.26, Juvenile Handicap; 2.11, King George Handicap; 2.54, Spring Handicap; 3.36, Members' Handicap; 4.21, Electric Handicap; and 5.5, Three Kings Handicap. M field of eight is carded for the King George Handicap, the chief event, and the brilliant Gallio is topweight with 9.0. In the three races he has had since resuming after a long spell Gallio has shown that he retains his pace and tho manner in which lie won the open sprint at Ellerslie last Monday was distinctly pleasing. Gallio has benefited by his recent racing and his gallop over seven furlongs yesterday was good. Class should stand to Gallio and he is likely to take considerable beating even though he is conceding amounts ranging from 151b. to 281b. to his opponents. Chances oi Kiltowyn

One of the most difficult for him to beat is Kiltowyn, who showed a glimpse of real form when ho finished third in the Spring Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday. Like Gallio, Kiltowyn is improving with his racing and slight improvement upon his latest effort should place him well in the picture. Jonathan is another who may command respect in spite of, his two defeats at Ellerslie. Ho has been working well and his round on the outside of the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday indicated that he has taken no harm from his recent racing. Moreover, he may go better at a mile and a-quarter than sit the shorter distances ho ran in his latest races.

Fersen's latest form has not been impressive, but he is improving in condition with racing and worked freeijr Yesterday, no that he "may do better at any time. Bonny Gay is also engaged in 'the. Members' Handicap,- in which she appears more favourably placed. Although defeated, Gay Rebel and Tybalt ran creditably at the recent meeting at Ellerslie and they are likely light-weights. Con Fuoco's form has fallen below expectations and -unless he shows marked improvement upon his latest efforts his prospects of success may not bo bright. It is probable that there will be strong support for Gallio, Kiltowyn and Jonathan. Likely Sprint Fancies

Some smart sprinters will contest the Electric Handicap, but as a result of his forward running at Paeroa, where he was narrowly beaten by Miss Lu, Orate may be a strong fancy. On that occasion Orate was having his first race after a spell and. did not appear ready, so that ho should bo capable of even better to-morrow. One .factor, In his fatfoiir is that lie _ is' a: : brilliant beginner and another, is that he won at, Ah-ondsjle last autumn. Recent racing appears'to hayo benefited ,'frrty Bit, who worked solidly yesterday, and ho its likely to make a forward showing'. Triune has reached a favourable' positron in the handicaps after a number of defeats and he would only require to repeat his best to make it difficult for the others. Tosh did not perform as well as expected at Ellerslic, but Bachelor King gave indications of being close to form when he finished fourth to Gallio, Anion and Trilliarch in the Epsom Handicap on Monday. Crooning and Star Artist have .no recent form, but both are capable sprinters when fit. Star Artist will be making her first appearance for some time and may be all the better for a race. Erndale is a solid performer but he might not appeal much if the track remains as, firm as it was yesterday. Ihe favourites may be Orate, Bachelor King Triune.

FINAL GALLOPS ' HALF-MILE BY SEBROF TRAY BIT AND ARMACOURT TRIUNE ALSO- SHAPES WELL Conditions were excellent for training operations at Avondale yesterday, when the course proper, with the flags out 40ft., was available for galloping. The going was fast tind the best efforts were credited to Sebrof, Tray Bit, i Triune' and Al.vth. On the course proper Sebrof (Cammick) reeled off h'alf-a-mile in 50 2-ss, infusing a good deal of dash into his work. Sebrof suffered a lapse of form near the end of last season, and has not raced for some months. Tray Bit (Goldfinch) pleased more than Armacourt (Howard) oyer lialf-n-mile in 50 3-ss. Tray Bit appears to have benefited by recent racing, and may be seen to more advantage in coming engagements than he was at Kllerslie. The two-year-old Gay Hussar sprinted down the straight. Ho displayed promise in finishing third at Kllerslie and is on the improve. High Tea» who is showing improved condition, and Tiverton did useful work. Beverley (Goldfinch) looked to be going stronger than Gold Eagle (Howard) at the end of half-a-mile in 52. 3-ss. Beverley is making some progress. Lady Clorane (Cainmick) was better than Bayamo (Howard) over the lust three of four furlongs in 38 4-ss. . .■ Mai de Mer (Wiggins) completed the last seven furlongs of a mile in l.uSi 1-5, increasing the speed over the last half in 53 2-ss. Mai do Mer hns disappointed since running a good-race afr the Pakuranga Hunt meeting, but should not bo without prospects tomorrow; Erndale (Maria) coverM lialf-a-mile in 53 «2-ss. An easing of the going would probably favour Erndale, who appeared a trifle scratchy until he warmed up.

Triune (Mclnally) had the measure of Alyth (Howard) at the .conclusion of fivo furlongs in 1.5 1-5. The first two were run in 26 2-5s and ho finished strongly. Triune is nicely placed in the weights after a number of doft'Ga'v Rebel (Howard) trotted*twice round. Although he looks bright and muscular alter his racing at iMlorslie Gav Ilebel seemed to be a little tender. It would probably be to his advantage if rain came to soften the going. Airam and Eastern Heir wefe not doing their best while running three furlongs in 41 2-ss. They appear .to have come through their recent racing satisfactorily.
