PUBLICITY WORK

THE MIRAMAR STUDIOS PHOTOGRAPHS AND POSTERS INTERESTING EXHIBITION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Thursday An exhibition of New Zealand publicity matter, i including dioramas, posters and photographs, opened yesterday at the reception room, Parliament Buildings. The matter was for the most part the product of the Government studios at Miramar and was of high quality. The most striking exhibits were a number of large dioramas, with greatlyenlarged photographic backgrounds' heavily retouched with bright colour. The principal one depicted Mount Egmont seen mirrored ih a placid lake, and was a quite outstanding scenic subject carried out in a manner that did it full justice.

The diorama of the Maori woman in tho thermal regions lowering a bag into a hot spring, while tourists stand watching, is effective treatment of an old theme. Perhaps the best of all was that of the Fox Glacier, seen from a distance, across an area of forest and hill. In the foreground a rider has dismounted from a piebald pony to let himself and his companion through a gato in a real wire fence. Another scene, advertising the Hermitage, showed a party setting out for the skiing ground, and was very well executed.

Mr. G. Bridgman's ■ painting of the West Coast Sounds with a launch floating on a sea that reflected the lofty peaks, showed a mastery of the poster art of simplicity. Mr. L. C. Mitchell's posters showed great mastery of technique, and in many cases caught the spirit of the New Zealand scenery with great accuracy. Harry Rountrpe's leaping swordfish was the finest poster in the collection. Some remarkable photographs were exhibited. One of the finest was that of Lake Waikaremoana, showing Panikiri Bluff from across the lake. Another very fine artistic colour-photo was of a Maori maiden seated in profile, with a most attractive' effect of light.
