CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday The Methven trotting meeting held yesterday was notablesfor large dividends. Blue Spark and Sagamore each paid over a thirds of a century and several others returned supporters double-figure dividends. The track was very fast and all the placed horses improved by many seconds on their handicap times. Run at a fast pace, the Methven Cup provided a fine race. Play On won by the narrowest of margins in 4.25 —a race record. With half the distance covered Real Burton and Discord were in front from Kibo, Play On and Air- - craft. Kibo moved to the lead going down the back, and she led into the straight, with Play On,. Renown's Best . and Mystery Yet following. A stirring finish resulted in a narrow win for Play On over Kibo. Renown's Best had his work cut out to beat Mystery Yet for third place. Eighteen Carat was fifth, in front of Golden Cross. The winner showed rare staying ability, but. Mystery Yet was an unlucky horse, for "he was hemmed in and could not get a chance to challenge the leaders. At no stage of the race was Casanova doing his work well. He fell three furlongs from homo.

Colonel Grattan made most of the running in the Mount Harding Handicap and cleared right away from the field. Plainly, he is a pacer of class. He passed the post well clear of Ivy Peterson, with Chelidon fully extended to beat Stylish Boy. The remainder wera outclassed.

The Visitors' Handicap, one of the most interesting events of the day, was won by Mystery Yet. A closely-running field entered the straight with Aircraft just in front of Ciro, Beal Burton, Golden Direct and. Mystery Yet with Nobleman tucked in on the rails. At the distance post Mystery let found an opening and, with a fait he gain the verdict from Aircraft. Ba | ttjefield, who finished very fast r &r° tod Cross were next. Mystery Yet thoroughly deserved his win. .
