Saturday Owing to the parades at Hastings on Thursday, there was not much fast work this morning, although the spring meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club is only a week off. The track was I in excellent order. Royal Minstrel, a Gloucester Cup candidate, took 1.18 for sis furlongs, going comfortably throughout. On the course proper Master Cyklon impressed when, assisted home over the last four of six furlongs, he ran the distance in 1.15. He will have his first race since the autumn at Hastings next Saturday and is very forward. With a 71b. allowance he should be diffioult to dispose of in the Spring Handicap. Tullamore, who is much improved, i was hard held to register 52s for half a mile. Oha and Marching On easily covered five furlongsin 1.5, time which was equalled by Trailer. Blue Shirt caused surprise by clearing away from Padishah and leading all the way over a mile, to win by four lengths in 1.45. Tres Sec, who is in solid condition, worked twice round solidly, to come home the last five furlongs in 1.6. Royal Spades did not impress in taking 40s for three furlongs. Tiger Gain, who is very big and has not been galloped since the Grand National meeting, did strong threequarter pace work in company with Journet. "Wmitangi's working gallop over five furlongs 1:ook 1.10. Gasman, who is again eligible for hack races, due to the new rule, with his stable-mate Fossicker, leisurely covered half a mile in 51 2-ss. *

Moving short in front, Red Rufus registered 1.47 for once round on the plough. The novices, Star Lad and Anubis, were hard held in getting to the end of half a mile in 525. The two-year-old Diana Tractrix, who ran third 'to Surmount and Protector at Wanganui, also took 525. A trio of Gloucester Cup candidates, Mercian Prince, Parry and Kahikatoa, all carrying amateur riders with 11.0 up, ran the last six of seven furlongs in 1.21, all being ridden out. Hamarin led Mahutai all tho way over seven in 1.34.

Cletrac, ridden by a light-weight, went well over a round in 1.42.

From a standing start, Le Toquet registered 52s for half a mile. Hunting Cat, a New Zealand Cup candidate, was exercised on the sand. Hastings and Trentham racing should indicate what chance there is of a repetition of last year's breakdown, which prevented him participating in the Cup. Blue Tiger gave a clean exhibition over six hurdles.

The Duke of Gloucester Cup, to bo decided next Saturday, is creating great interest, many owners being most desirous of winning, and amateur riders being anxious to ride in the event. Horses and riders from Gisborne to Wanganui will participate in what promises to be the best amateur riders' race seen in this district. The present favourites are Do Friend, Soho and Mr. F. Ormond's elect of Werohia or Taro. i JUDGE AT HASTINGS APPOINTMENT OF MR. B. BERGIN [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HASTINGS, Saturday At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, Mr. B. Bergin was appointed judge, vice Mr. W. P. Russell, resigned.
