CHILLED BEEF TRADE

WORKS FACILITIES EXTENSION AT WAITARA [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Saturday Substantial additions to Messrs. Thomas Borthwick and Sons' Waitara freezing works to cater for the expanding chilled meat export trade are to begin immediately.

Over several years experimental shipments have bean made from Waitara, but owifig to the lack of up-to-date facilities they have not been successful. Last year the firm sent Taranaki chilling stock to the Feilding works for treatment.

The practicability of export having boon proved, the firm has decided to make additions to the Waitara works to provide the most up-to-date chiller and storage space. Preliminary work has been begun.

PERFUMERY TRADE

RAPID REVIVAL IN PROGRESS The perfumery trade, which suffered greatly during the depression, is now rapidly reviving. Scents continued to sell during the slump, but many people had to make-shift with the cheap varieties produced by dissolving synthetic substitutes for floral essences in some vehicle less costly than rectified spirit. " Now," states the Manchester Guardian Commercial, " there is a swing over to the costly blends of odours, imprisoned in expensive and beautiful vials, which are in turn packed in attractive cases. Bulgarian attar of roses, the price of which works out at more than a penny a drop when bought in wholesale quantities, was almost a drug on the market for years; the banks were tired of lending money on stocks, and districts which for generations had been devoted to rose cultivation were gradually going over to crops for which there was a readier sale. The precious attar is coining into its own again, and stocks old and new aro being steadily reduced. Ambergris, an even more expensive product, is another ' raw material ' of the perfumery industry which is being requisitioned again, while the turnover in lavender, neroli and geranium oils —all of them costly—has greatly expanded of late."
