OPENING OF SEASON CEREMONY AT ROCKY NOOK A number of the Auckland bowling clubs held their official opening of the 1937-38 summer season on Saturday. Beautiful weather prevailed and conditions were ideal. ' A large gathering marked the Rocky Nook Bowling Club's function. The president, Mr. J. M. Stormont, welcomed the many visitors, while the patron, the Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. H. A. Anderson, expressed his wishes for a successful season. Mr. W. H. Tongue, the club's delegate to the Auckland Bowling Centre, spoke on behalf of the parent body. WAITEMATA CLUB In welcoming a large gathering of members and visitors at the opening of the Waitemata Bowling Club's season, the president, Mr. G. B. Chinnery, paid a tribute to the green superintendent, Mr. W. L. Rowland, for the excellent condition of the greens. He expressed regret at the fact that his sorvices would be lost to the club owing to his residence in another district. The club, he said, had a record membership, and its prospects were never better. The co-operation of the Birkenhead and Northcote Lawn Tennis Club was appreciated. The Auckland Bowling Centre was represented by Messrs. A Dignan and M. J. Walsh, the former extending congratulations to Mr. Chinnery on his re-election. The Mayor of Northcote, Mr. R. Martin, and the deputy-mayor of Birkenhead, Mr. A. Hadfield. also addressed the gathering. The first kitty was thrown by Mr. \\. Low, a. foundation member 38 years ago, while the first bowl was played by Mrs. R. G. Holland, wife of the vice-president, who then declared the season open. Points scored by teams representing the visiting bowlers totalled 173, while Waitemata teams aggregated 146. A match Auckland Centre v. Waitemata president s team, resulted in a draw, as follows: —J. TRANSPORT CLUB Assurance was given at the opeining of the Transport Bowling Club's season that the Auckland Transport Board would co-operate in furthering the-social activities of the staff by the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, chairman, the Hon. F. E. Lark, deputy-chairman, and Mr. W. Nagle, a member of the board. Mr. E. W. Inder, representing the Auckland Bowling Centre, wished the club a successful season. Thanks were returned, on behalf of the cfub, by Mr. A. E. Ford, general manager of the Transport Board. Mrs. Mason, to whom a bouquet was presented, threw up the first jack, and Mrs. Farrelly rolled the first bowl. PUKEKOHE CLUB [from oub own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Sunday A presentation was made to Mr. G. L. Gladding, secretary of the Auckland Bowling Centre, at the official opening yesterday of the 26th season of the Pukekohe Bowling Club. In making the presentation, Mr. F. A. Hosking, president-elect of the Dominion Bowling Association, explained that it was to mark the 21st successive occasion on which Mr. Gladding had been present at the opening ceremony. The greens were declared open by the vice-president, Mr. H. Burrows, in the absence, through illness, of the president, Mr. W. F. J. Munro. Mr. Burrows welcomed the visitors and also expressed pleasure at the attendance of five foundation members, Messrs. W. -Roulston, who is also a life member, F. Perkins, W. Blake, D. Roulston, and J. H. Keith. Mr. A. E. Whitten, past-president of the Auckland Bowling Centre, spoke on behalf of the affiliated clubs and Mr. J. H. Short, country clubs' representative, the centre and a member of the Pukekohe Club replied. The greens were in fine order and visitors were present from as far north as Grey Lynn and as far south as Huntly. Mrs. Burrows threw the first jack and trailed it with the first bowl. PAPATOETOE CLUB Excellent conditions favoured the official opening of the Papatotoe Bowling Club. The president, Mr. J. McFarland, welcomed a lar,;ce assembly of members; including numerous representatives from city and suburban clubs. Short i/cldresses were given by the club patron, Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., and Mr. L. C. H. Dawson, who conveyed the good wishes of the Auckland Centre, whom he represented. The greens were declared open for play after Mrs. McFarland had thrown the first jack. There were 12 rinks engaged, the greens playing excellently. TE PAPAPA CLUB A large gathering of visitors, including representatives of 12 affiliated clubs, attended the opening of the Te Papapa Bowling Club's season. They were welcomed by the president, Mr. L. Jones, and Mrs. Jones. The deputy-ma.vor of Onehunga, Mr. A. A Coates, congratulated the club on its progress and the fine condition of the greens. Mr. A. G. Osborne, M.P., also spoke. The Auckland Bowling Centre was represented by Mr. S. Coldicutt, who conveyed the centre's best wishes. Mrs. L. Jones, after throwing the first jack, was presented with a handsome rose bowl by Mr. R. G. Speight, on behalf of the members. The annual social gathering was afterwards held in the club's now pavilion. PAPAKURA CLUB Mr. S. D. Rice, the president, declared the season open at the official opening at the Papakura Bowling Club's green. A large number of members and visitors attended. WAIPU CLUB [from ol t r own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Sunday Representatives from the Paparoa, Maungaturoto, Whangarei and Portland Clubs were present at the official opening of the Waipu Bowling Club. The green was in splendid condition. The president, Mr. A. R. Rimmer, welcomed the visitors and Mrs. Rimmer threw the first jack. KENSINGTON CLUB [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Sunday A large number of members attended the Kensington Bowling Club's official opening.
