CLUBS OPEN THE SEASON

CEREMONIES ON SATURDAY ASSOCIATION OFFICERS BUSY Several lawn tennis clubs in the city and suburban areas held their official openings of the season on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal, and there were large attendances at all the courts. CAMPBELL PARK CLUB LADY CHAMPION PRESENT The Campbell Park Lawn Tennis Club, the largest hard-court club in Auckland, had an attendanc?i of about 200 at its opening of the season on Saturday afternoon. In addition to Mr. J. K Hall, who represented the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, Mr. F. J. Ohlson;' a life member of the association, was also present. Mr. I. J. Goldstine, Mayor of One Tree Hill, and members of the One Tree Hill Borough Council, attended. The president, Mr. D G. Alfrey, declared the season open, at the same time thanking the One Tree Hill Borough Council for its action in forming a footpath which had greatly improved the appearance of the frontage of the club's property. Miss E. Stewart served, the first ball. Mr. H. R. Harris, secretary of the club, explained and arranged a successful progressive tournament. There was a large number of new members on the courts, and among the players was Miss Margaret Beverley, of Matamata, present holder of the New Zealand ladies' championship. The 10 chip courts were all in excellent order. NEWLY-FORMED CLUB KONINI OFFICERS' FINE WORK Work which has been in progress for the past four years brought its reward on Saturday afternoon, when the Ivonini Lawn Tennis Club officially opened its season. The club's enthusiastic officials, under the direction of Mr. S. Armstrong, have formed working bees each week-end, and have gradually transformed what was a rocky reserve into a level surface, upon which there are now tiro courts and a small pavilion which are 8 credit to the workers. The One Tree Hill Borough Council has from time to time loaned the club implements and men to assist in the formation of the courts. The club has a membership of 10, and at the opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon the Mayor of One Tree Hill, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, heartily congratulated the club's officers and members upon their great effort. Members of the One Tree Hill Borough Council were also in attendance. PAPATOETOE CLUB A PROGRESSIVE POLICY The official opening of the Papatoetoe lawn Tennis Club's season was held on_ Saturday, when the conditions were almost ideal. The president, Mr. F. N Waters, welcomed a large gathering of players, representative of neighbouring clubs, and Mr. Harold Clay, president of the Auckland Association. Mr. Waters referred to the exceptional progress which the club had made over recent years. He said that, with the assistance of the Papatoetoe Town Board, a comprehensive improvement scheme was contemplated, The six courts fronting the main road, were to be reconstructed to permit, of a strip of the frontage being laid down in ornamental shrubs and flower beds as part of a beautifying scheme. Alterations to the pavilion, which would provide better accommodation, were also proposed. Mr. Clay congratulated the club on its progressive policy. The courts were fully occupied in play- during the afternoon. THE FRANKLIN DISTRICT SEVERAL CLUB FUNCTIONS [fkom our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Sunday Fine weather prevailed yesterday, leveral clubs in the Franklin district held their official openings for the season. The attendance at SOl the functions was goipd, indicating 'that interest in the game in the new season will probably be greater than ever throughout the district. The excellent condition of the courts was commented on by, the president of the Waiuku Club. Mr. J. Naysmith, at the opening ceremony in connection with his club. The president of the Franklin Lawn Tennis Association, Mr. J. A. Sparkcs, was an official visitor for the occasion, and reminded the gathering of the Easter tournament and annual ball to be held by the association. Shore, president of the club, declared the courts open for play, and Mrs. Shore served the first ball. The Rev. J.. Pattison declared St. James' courts, Pukekohe, open for the season, and the president, Mr. A Schlacpfer, also spoke. 'The first ball was served by Mrs. S. Fitness. Busing, officially declared the Papakura Club's courts open for play on Saturday, including two Mw courts, making seven available for members this season. Mrs Kir.imont, former club champion, played the first ball. The visjtors included Mr. H. Clay president of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association, and Mr. L. »• Williamson, the club's delegate on the association. The winners'of a Yankee tournament were 88 follows:—Ladies, Miss N.
