TAKANINI HORSES

WORK ON INSIDE GEASS VALAMITO GOES PLEASINGLY NORDIC SONG SHOWS PACE Although rain hail fallen overnight, the inside of the grass track was available for fast work at Takanini yesterday and it was in good order. Valamito went pleasingly over five furlongs while Nordic Song and Poker Dico went fast over v two furlongs, botli showing a lot of promise.

Anion (lnglis) finished better than tho two-year-old Arvakur (O'Brien) at tho end of half a mile in 53 3-ss, the last thrco furlongs jn 40 3-ss. Arvakur got two lengths the worse of tho start and was on the outside. He did not make any noise during his .work. Melanion did pace work. Te Poto (Stone),,who is becoming a little wayward going on to the track, strode over five furlongs without being extended at any stage.

Valamito (Stone) was a length in front of Round Up (Collett) and Inver (O'Brien) at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 4-5. They ran tho last three furlongs in 40s, Valamito going well. If taken to Paeroa he should bo hard to beat. Inver pulled up lame and his prospects appear doubtful. Disturbed (Mudford) was a head in front of High Sea (G. Smith) ut the end of five furlongs in 1.7 3-5, running the last threo in 41 l-ss. Both were kicked out. Gai Wind (Mudford) was slightly better than Eeldberg (T. Green) over six furlongs in 1.20 3-5. They took 42 3-5s for tho last three. Gai Wind had much tho better of the weights and was on tho outside.

Royal Passage (Mudford) and Silver Glow (Stockley) finished three lengths in front of Parquet (Bell) at the end of a mile in 1.50 2-5. They ran the first two furlong's in 28sj and the last three in 425. Sir Robin is not being asked to do any strenuous work at present.

_ Nordic Song (Curwen), from practically a stand, ran two furlongs with Poker Dice (A. Tinker) in 255. Easing up, they occupied 38s for three iurlongs. Both possess plenty of speed. War Picture (Mudford) was timed to run the last five of six furlongs in 1.8, finishing well to run thejast three in 39 2-ss. Although still small, she is growing. War Picture is to take her place in the Kerepeehi Hack Handicap at Paeroa on Saturday, in the colours previously carried by Gay Talkie. Flash By (T. Green), who will make his racing debut at Paeroa on Saturday, was associated with Ivy Willonyx over fivo furlongs in 1.6 4-5. They went fast while running the first three furlongs in 38s. Bon Star (Mudford) strode over half a mile with Perillus (Jones) and Brazilian (Bell) in 57 2-ss. Bon Star pulled up sound. Raepata (Walters) went lazily over tho last three furlongs of his work in 445. Spearcourt (A. Tinker) and High Quality (T. Green) worked together over a mile and a-half in 2.59. They ran the last half-mile in 58 3-ss. Both jumpers are coming back to form quickly. Hot Box was not on the track. Golden Spahi, Red Ledger, Lady Ruler, Bachelor King and Palustre did serviceable tasks. Nordic Song and Palustre are likely to make the trip to Trentham for the Wellington Racing Club's Spring Meeting in October. PAEROA TRACK WORK DAY WIND IN GOOD ORDER JOHNNY WALLS' USEFUL FIVE [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] PAEROA, Tuesday With the approach of the Taumarunui Racing Club's meeting at Paeroa on Saturday and Monday, several of the local horses were sent along this morning. Tho trestles were out about 25 feet and the course was in excellent order. The going promises to be better than ever before for the meeting on Saturday and Monday. . Hymel ran five furlongs in 1.7. March Phar and Marheke together went the same distance in a shade better time, finishing on terms. Desert Star and Sandy Mountain worked over two rounds at a good working pace. Johnny Walls and To Maranui finished together at the end of fivo furlongs in 1.7. Others to do useful work were Slam, Strathire, Maereana and Gold Vaals. Day Wind, looking improved after his Avondale racing, went freely over a circuit, but was not after time. J. Irwin lias him really well, and he promises to race prominently during the season. Biform, who has won several races at point-to-point meotings during the last six weeks, looks on the lean side, although hard in condition after a season's hunting. He was given strong work over a couple of rounds. Biform is a good fencer and has to be respected in the steeplechase events at tho com-, ing meeting. The latest arrivals include tho Rotorua horses Windcress, Kena, Silver Quex and Simint. Ridden by 11. Long, Mclvanui was sent oyer five furlongs yesterday. FINE DERBY TRIAL HUA'S MILE AND A-QUARTER Tho gallop of the Australian Derby candidate Hua in running a mile and aquarter with Silver Standard at Rosehill on September 18 was highly praised by experienced racing men. A well-known trainer, who has prepared horses at Rosehill for more than 20 years, declared that Hua's gallop was the greatest he had seen at Rosehill. Ho recalled that many great gallopers had worked on tho course, including Talking only last spring, but none had ever run anywhere near the time made by Hua and Silver Standard. "Such champions as Poitrel, Kennaquliair, Pantheon, David, Rivoli and Valanuta all raced over tho ltosohill mile and a-quarter, yet the 2m 5s has stood for seven years," said the trainer. EPSOM AND METROPOLITAN HEAVY DOUBLE WAGERING Leading Sydney bookmakers estimate that if the stable double, Talking and Mala, win the Epsom and Metropolitan, £IOO,OOO will be taken out of the ring, says an Australian writer. Mr. Alan Cooper, owner of tho pair, has supported them to win approximately £40,000. Many heavy bettors have followed tho stable lead, eagerly accepting the short price about tho pair. Two other stable doubles havo been supported for a lot of money. They are lied Thespian and Mestornvon and Golden Chance and Curator. The latter pair have since gone out of favour. Gold Rod and Mala and Gold Rod and Silver Standard aro other doubles that have been supported for fortunes, and if one of tho combinations wins, the ring will be relieved of £60,000. In view of tho support for stable doubles, it is interesting to note that the last stable double to win the Epsom and Metropolitan was in 1910, when Silver Hampton and Eric won for Mr. . W. M. Fletcher. Both horses wero trained by William Stringer.
