WIN FOR SOUTH AUCKLAND South Auckland avenged its defeat at Pukekohe earlier in tne season when it beat the Auckland intermediate team at GribbleHirst Park, after a lino game, by « points to 0. South Auckland made the most of a strong wind in its favour in the first half, during which Lauer, on the wing, scored two line tries, one of which was converted by Moylo. In the second spell the Auckland forwards packed well, and for the vrreater part play was in South Auckland's territory. Auckland was unlucky not to score at least one try, a force resulting after a sustained forward and back attack. It was the superior weight of the South Auckland forwards that finally decided the issue, and, in view of the fact that members of the two leading teams of the intermediate grade were not available owing to championship finals, and three club teams were travelling, the Auckland (earn (hat was finally selected put up a meritorious performance. For South Auckland, Lauer, who scored both tries, and Paynes played well in the backs, while the whole pack gave a fine exhibition. For Auckland, the best of the backs were Duignan, at fullback, Bowers, on the wing, and Meharry, at centre-three-quarter. Although well outweighted, the forwards stuck to their task throughout, the most prominent being Curnow, Kendall and Simmonds. Mr. Ladkin was referee.
