FINNISH BARQUES
PROFITABLE TRADE THE PAMIR AND PENANG BOTH TO LOAD FOR AUCKLAND Two of the comparatively feu- remaining sailing skips on the high seas, the Finnish barques Pamir and Penang, arc on their return voyages from England to southern waters. Both ships participated in the grain race from Australia to England, and will arrive in Auckland in December with guano from the Seychelles Islands, Indian Ocean. The Pamir, commanded by Captain Bjorkfelt, left Hull 011 July 3. being chartered to carry timber from the Baltic to East London. Assuming normal conditions prevailed, the Pamir should' shortly reach Mahe, in the Seychelles group. Either the Penang or the Killoran was also expected to carry Baltic timber to East London. Under the command of Captain Msttson, the Penang cleared Leith on August 2, and she, too. should shortly arrive at the Sevelieiles.
Ueports have been received at Auckland that ten of Captain Gustav Erickson's Finnish sailing fleet of 15 have been chartered to load timber for South Africa in the Baltic. This practice was common before sail was displaced by steam on the chief trade routes of the world, but for \cars the sailing ships of the grain fleet have made the voyage from Europe to Australia in ballast, relying for revenue solely upon the homeward wheat freight and the premiums of their apprentices. The chartering of these sailing ships in a trade from which they have been absent for so many years is taken as an indication that steam tonnage is not readily available for timber loading in tho Baltic. The Pamir and Penang will, by their charters for guano from the Seychelles to Auckland, pay their way over the entire outward voyage. On completion of discharge at Auckland, both barques will leave for Australia to load for next year's grain markets.
