RIOTING IN KENYA
OFFICIAL EXPLANATION SEQUEL TO PETTY DISPUTE British Wireless KTJGBY. August 30 The Colonial Office received a telegram from the Governor of Kenya that the recent Mombasa riots were confined to faction fighting arising out of petty disputes between Washihiri Arabs and Jaluo Africans, and a few odd members of other up-country tribes joining in. Coast and other Arabs were not involved and nothing was directed against the Government, Europeans or Indians. The disturbances were confined to natives of one location, the remainder of the town being unaffected. Complete order was restored by Saturday night. Police detachments were still camping at the location and constant lorry patrols were being maintained. The casualties number 14 Washihiri and one Jaluo dead. About 60 were arrested, a large number of whom had already been convicted. The situation was almof.b normal.
