CONTEST AT AYONDALE BREEDING OF CANDIDATES PROTECTOR AND TE HERO The first two-year-old race of the season in Auckland will be the A von dale Stakes, on September IS, and it would appear from the number remaining in alter the declaration of forfeit, even though a few may liavo been left in through oversight, that there will he a good-sized field when the day arrives. The candidates hail from various parts of the North Island, and there is even one from the South Island, this being the chestnut gelding Protector, by Lord Warden from Windshield. Protector is trained by F. D. Jones at llicearton for Mrs. J. W. Woodhousc, daughter of the late H. E. Knight, owner of Limerick. He has shown speed on the tracks, and is one of a team of four Jones is bringing to'the North Island for the early spring meetings. One of the most interesting candidates is the fine-looking colt Te Hero, who made a good impression when he appeared in the two-year-old parade at Ellerslie recently. To Hero is by Heroic from Prodico, and a half-brother to Gallio. Ho is trained at Te Awamutu by A. Cook for Mr. J. Hollicr, and there will be much interest in the way he .shapes >ll his first race. The unnamed filly by Surveyor from Lady Comet belongs to Mr. 13. Brewer, Cambridge. Riding Lady hnds from Ha went, where she lias been displaying speed on the tracks, and is a chestnut filly by Rulanut from Gaiety Girl, hence a half-sister to Just an idea. The unnamed colt by Raceful from Persia belongs to .Messrs. Crosby Brothers, Hamilton, and is bred for early speed. Bayamo is a bay filly by The Ace from Saiammbo. Lady Clorane is a bay filly by Lord Warden from Clorane, by Bosewing from Belcaire, by Treclaro from Bhanavar, by John o' Gaunt.

The unnamed filly by Hunting Song from Valadore belongs to Mr. E. Fitzgerald, Gisborne. She is from a family that has produced some good winners, her dam being by Valkyrian from Adornment, by The Nut from Elegance, by Seaton Delaval. Namara is a chestnut colt by Lackham from Tikaday, a half-sister to Dungarvan. His work at New Plymouth suggests that lie is well forward. The filly Diana Tctrix is owned by Mr. W. I. Hamilton, Hastings, and is by Hunting Song from Traetrix. Mr. It. B. Hines is represented by Kingcraft, by King Lti from Caviare, and Miss Brierly, by King Lu from Lady Brierly. Kingcraft is a half-brother .to Itoiia Bay and Miss Brierly a half-sister to Master Brierly. Tlio Wellington owner Mr. W. Higgins has the well-bred Dissipation, who is a brown filly by Night Raid from Passbook, by Paper Money from Password, by Martian. Dissipation is a half-sister to Deficit.

Arvakur is trained at Takanini by F. Smith for Mr. T. Impcy. Ho is a big colt by Boau Pcrc from The Begum, henco a half-brother to Mazir and Strctto, and a member of tbo same family as Supremacy. Phildale is by Pliilainor from, Lunette, hence a halfbrother to Erndale. Waitama is a brown filly by Martarma from Waiwene. .Faster Heir is Australian-bred, being by The Buzzard from Eastern Belle, and a full-brother to The Buzzer. He is a cood stamp of colt, belonging to Mr. W. H. Maria. Jayola is a baycolt bv Boy Jay from Lvrola. Hot Box is a chestnut colt by Cape Horn from Iccball, by Valkyrian, from the imported marc Pebble JI. Fidel is is a bay colt by Lord Quex from C'atalani, hence a full-brother to the Winter Cup winner Catalogue. Ho is being trained at Ellerslio by R. S. Bagby for Mr. Max Steinberg. Wynardo is a bay colt by The Ace from Wynctte, and is owned by Mr. 11. M. Taylor.

TAKANINI TRAINING ANION AND IMVER GO WELL FLASH BY DISPLAYS SPEED Some interesting work was witnessed at Takanini yesterday when the middle grass, with the poles out sft., was open for fast work. The tracks are getting faster and the going was good. Anion, I uver, Nordic Song, Flash By, Perillus and Brazilian all went pleasingly. Disturbed (G Smith) was not bustled early to run the last four of five furlongs in 5G 2-ss. Round Up (Collett) wrts a bit too good for Valamito (Stone) at the end of half a mile, in 51 3-ss. It was Valamito's first serious work since racing at the Pakuranga meeting. Anion (O'Brien) just shaded Inver (Tnglis) at the end of half a mile in 50 3-ss. Anion finished well to run the last three in 37 2-ss.

To Poto (Collett), who is on the improve, ran four furlongs in 53 l-ss. Lap Up (T. Green) covered the last three furlongs of a round in 435.

High Sea (G. Smith) and Silver Glow"(Mudford) were evenly matched over six furlongs in 1.19 3-ss, tho last three in 425.

Gai Wind (Stockley) and Royal Passage (Mudford) went an easy seven furlongs in 1.40 3-5, running the last three in 44 3-ss. Flash By (Curwen) and Nordic Song (T. Green) sprinted two furlongs smartly from the six tc/ tho four in 245.

Sir ■ Robin (A. Tinker) was not extended while running three furlongs in Its. Ladv Kuler (Tinker) worked over a mile and a-lialf. being accompanied over the last round by Lapidarinn (T. Green). They came home well over the last half-mile in 52 3-ss. Parquet, War Picture, leak, Inquisitor, Palustre, Poker Dice, Bachelor King, iiaepata and High Quality did useful work. \V. Townsend left for iSew Plymouth 011 Monday with the smart galloper Fox Moth, who should perform well among the hack sprinters at the combined hunt moo tine A. Quinlivan decided not to make tlie trip with Feldberg.
