FINAL GALLOPS

A SOLID HALF-MILE

race call and. brilliancy

CUTE MELODY WORKS EARLY

SLEEPY PERFORMS SOUNDLY

[BV TELEGRAPH —OWX COKHKSPOXDEXT] XEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday

Some interesting work was performed at New Plymouth this morning, when most of the local horses were given their final gallops before the combined meeting of the Taranaki and the EgniontAVanganui Hujit Clubs, which opens on Thursday. Nearly all the galloping took place on the outside of the course proper, with the flags out about 25ft. The track was in splenoiid order after light rain ovei'night. The best efforts were those of Pace Call, Brilliancy, Person and Dancing Ladv.

It was not properly light when Cute Melody was half a mile and she was not timed. However, she finished in great stvle and is in good order. oEven Money and Cloak covered five furlongs in 1.6 4-o. They kept together all the way and finished solidly. Cloak, a three-year-old filly by Yaals from Habit, is making good progress. Mustang and Te lluia jumped, oil' from the five furlongs post and, after being joined at the three by Erin Boy, were on terms at the straight entrance, where Te Huia ran inside the flags and had to be eased up. Erin Boy ran on well to finish a neck in front of Mi slang, who ran his five furlongs in 1.6 1-5. Erin Boy, who is by Mullaboden. displayed a nice turn of speed. ltacecamp and Bantrv began from a standing start at the five furlongs, but, after running three in ;595, they were eased in the straight.

Beginning smartly at the half-mile, Race Call was soon clear of Brilliancy, who put in some good work over the last furlong and was only a neck away at the end in 52 3-ss. It was a good effprt and Brilliancy's finish was impressive. Fersen and Gay Rebel Car.lsharper was going easily while running five furlongs in 1.8 4-5. He is in great heart and should possiess good prospects on Thursday. Olivette ran an easy six furlongs in 1.23 2-5. She is bearing a bright appearance. Dratbula, ridden out. was slightly in front of Clessamor at the end of threo furlorgs m '3B 4,-os. Clessamor was under a gcod hold throughout and continues to work soundly.

Fersen jumped off two lengths in front of Gay Rebel at the half-mile and led him home in 545. Fersen, who is in great heart,/appeared to have plenty in reserve, but Gay Rebel went lazily. Booklaw was going slightly better than Royal Dispute at the end of a niilp in 1.55, the l<ist five furlongs taking 1.10. Don Ernia and White Heron covered six furlongs in 3.23. It was Don Erma's first gallop since his fall last week and he moved freely, lie ivill probably take his place in the hurdles field on Saturday.

Winsome Lu cantered once round and sprinted up the straight. She ran half a mile on the plough on Monday mornins in 52 4-ss. She is still a little scratchy, but iis improving. Carleaf coycred six furlongs at tliree-quarter pace. Dancing Lady Sprints

.After a slow first furlong, Dancing Lady came home strongly to register 535: for half a. mile. She is working in pleasing fashion. On the plough Annover shaded Cynical Smile at the conclusion of a mile in 1.56, the las.t half taking 545. Both hunters worked well.

An interesting trial was staged when Sfeeyn*, Lady Jim and Fed Mint were sent- a mile and throe furlongs. They kept together for about seven furlongs, when Red Mint started to drop back: Over tho last three furlongs Sleepy and Platter drew away, Sleepy finishing nearly a length in front, with Lady Jim four lengths away. They ran the last mile in 1.54. Sleepy and Platter worked, well. Mr. J. X. Moonev, who has raced Cute Melody on lease, has now ' purchased the filly from Mr. S. Topless. The twci-year-old Erin Lad has been leased by his breeder, Mr. ft. G. Topless, to Mr. H. Nodder, New Plymouth. Erin Lad will 'probably make his first fpearance in the Debutant Stakes at anganui.
