GOLF BALL CAPERS

HAPPENINGS IN AUSTRALIA Golf balls cut some queer capers during the play in the Northern District championship at the Bendigo Golf Club, says a writer in a Victorian paper. The trouble began when a ball rebounded from a tree at the 13th and struck W. Gluth, who had made the shot, above the temple. The blow raised a large lump and left Gluth in a semidazed condition for some minutes. This recalls a similar incident which happened some years ago when tho Honourable Michael Scott hit a stake in a bunker—they were constructed with wire netting in those davs—with a clcek shot. The ball rebounded with such force as to completely stun Scott, who did not recover for some little time. Another player who found a ball obstreperous was C. Higson, who drove into the trees at the 16th. After six shots, each of which struck the trunk of a tree, ho found himself fully 100 yards behind the place at which his drive had finished. . W. Edgar also played .?, strange shot from a creek at the 10th. A couple of hundred people were standing behind him on the bank, but when lie played his shot the ball seemed to hit some obstruction and disappeared completely. After a minute or so it was found about 20 yards behind the spectators, having apparently described a high arc.
