DOM IM lON TOURNAMENT OFFICIAL OPENING TO-DAY Twenty-three teams comprising approximately 300 players, will take part i:a the eleventh annual ladies' Dominion basketball tournament, to be held under tlio control of tlie New Zealand Basketball Association at the Windmill I-!oad courts. The first series of matches will be played to-day, commencing at nine o clock. Further matches will be played to-morrow and Friday, and the final series on Saturday. An official opening of thd tournament will be held at ihe Windmill .Road courts this afternoon at 2.30 o'clock by the Mayoress of Auckland. Lady Ernest Davis. The rehearsal grand march was held yesterday, when the team photographs were also taken. The official photographs will be taken this afternoon. The tournament will be conducted in three grades, as follows: — ■ First Crad:!. —Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, Hawke's Bay, Southland. Second Gride. —Hutt Valley, Southland Minor, Wairarapa, Taranaki, South Canterbury, Ashburton, Manawatu, Waikato, Poverty B Third Grale.—West Coast, Te Kawau, Wanganui, Bush, Horoivhenuu, Wairoa, North Auckland, Hav.kc's Bay Minor. The various trophies which wil> ho competed for, wit in the holders shown ii\ parentheses, arc a:i follows: —Fi:rst grade: New Zealand Cup Southland), Annie Brown Cup lor the runner-up (Auckland). Second grade: President's Shield (South Canterbury), Hayhurst Cup (Taranaki). Third grade: Kiwi Trophy for the winner and the Armstrong Shield for the runner-up. At the conclusion of the tournament matches on Saturday afternoon, teams will be cho=en for the annual match between the North and South Islands. The North Island selector is Mrs. R. Lane, of Canterbury while Mrs. Hingston, of Hawkes Bay, will choose the South Island side. \ complimentary dinner to the players and officials will be held at the Farmers' Trading Company tearooms on Saturday at 0.30 p.m., when the various trophies will also be presented The ter.ms will be taken for a motor drive on Sunday, after which the majority of the visiting' players will depart by tiltMain Trunk express The only match for the New Zealand Cup to be played to-day will b» that between Auckland and Canterbury, at the No. 1 court at 2.10 o'clock.
