BREACH OF AN AWARD
INEXPERIENCED E-MPLOYER FAILURE TO PAY OVERTIME [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WHANG AREI, Tuesday The inspector of awards, Mr. C. P. Collins, proceeded against E. S. Andrews, proprietor of tho Leviathan Private Hotel, Whangarei, at the Magistrate's Court to-day, claiming a £lO penalty for an alleged breach of the private hotel employees' award. It was alleged that the defendant, between April 1 and July 11, employed three girls for more than eight hours a day and 44 hours a week without the payment of overtime. The inspector said that tho defendant commenced business in April without any previous experience. There were numerous breaches of the award, not perhaps serious, and in consequence only one charge had been laid. Mr. R. K. Trimmer, who entered a plea of guilty, said that his client had absolutely no desire to commit breaches of the award or to fail to pay his employees to the full. Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., said that the broach was probably due to inexperience. He awarded a penalty of £1 10s.
