AUCKLAND FIGURES ALL-ROUND INCREASE GAINS OVER LAST YEAR TOTALS FOR EIGHT MONTHS An all-round increase in revenue collected by the Customs Department in ; Auckland is shown in the return for last month, compared with those for 1 July and for August, 1936. Customs j duty totalled £323,769, the largest amount for any month this year, against £272,366 in July, and £272,666 in August, 1936. The total collection of customs, motor spirit and tyre duty last month was £389,768, compared with £324,799 in tho corresponding month last year and £335.961 in July. Excise on beier totalled £15,635, against £11,534 and £12.710 respectively, and sales tax collections were £85,306, compared with £73,922 and £81,956. hi the return for tho first eight months of this year, customs revenue alone totalled £2,237,699, against £2,038,246 in the January-August period last year. When motor spirit duty at 6d a gallon, and tyre duty were added, the total yields were £2,768.960 and £2,545.967. Excfse on beer for tho first eight months this year totalled £120,013, compared with £101,573 between January and August last year. Sales tax produced £659,652 in the period under review, the figure for the corresponding eight months last year being £537,944. The net customs revenue for the month totalled £359,941, which is easily a record figure for Wellington, eclipsing the previous record of £315,179 established in July. Tlifei figures for this month, folio-wed by those for August, 1936, are: —Net customs, £359,941 and £289,751; motor spirit, £68,418 and £61,268; tyre tax, £3701 and £18S0; sales tax, £113,754 and £93,206; beer excise, £6326 and £4251.

DUNEDIN INCREASE £21,570 LEER DUTY LESS IX AUGUST [nY TELEGKAI'H I'KKSS ASSOCIATION"] DUNEDIN. Tuesday Customs duty collected at the port of Dunedin during August shows an increase of £21,570 over the total for the same month last year. Following are the details of revenue for August, 1937, and August. 1936: —Customs duty, £83,830 and £62,260; beer duty, £21.161 and £25.526; sales tax, £27,493 and £24.192; petrol tax, £14.296 and £12,320; tyre tax, £1753 and £818; gold export duty, £2305 and £2394. The figures for the April-August period, together with those for the corresponding five-month period of last vear, are: —Customs duty. £340.995 and £288,548; beer duty, £114,428 and £103,587; sales tax, £132.627 and £116.755; petrol tax. £71,831 and £64,986; tyre tax, £5038 and £3616; gold export duty, £9803 and £9050.
