INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

Auckland Centre.—Mrs. C. No;(l presided. Mrs. W. Teape and Mrs. B. Cassidy were congratulated on their appointments as justices of the peace. Reports were given of the activities of the various circles. The entertainment took the form of a Scottish afternoon, arranged by Mrs. J. A. Stewart, and included items by Mesdames Bush, Kendal, W. N. Stewart, H. Griffiths, Richards, Black and Massicks. A talk on the life of Sir Walter Scott was given by Mrs. Howie. Otaua, —Tlk> last meeting was presided over by Mrs. West. An address on gardening was given by Mr. Gillman. Native trees were presented to two Maori schools in honour of Arbor Day. Competition results were as follows: — Vase of flowers, Mrs. G. Johnson, 1; Mrs. J. Hood, 2. Butter sponge: Mrs. J. Iloimcs, 1; Mrs. G. Johnson, 2. Marmalade: Mrs. G. Johnson, 1; Mrs. J. Hood, 2. Chutney: Miss A. Johnson, 1; Miss 0. Bright, 2. Pickled onions: Miss D. Dickey. 1; Miss A. Johnson, 2. Songs by Miss Una Hull were enjoyed. Group Meeting—The bi-annual group meeting was held in tho Springdale. Hall, each institute being responsible for a part of the day's programme. Addresses were given by Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Barker and Miss Clarke. Pen-painting was demonstrated by Mrs. O'Sullivan, reed loom work by Mrs. Kennedy, Indian quilting by Mrs Laurie, and wood pulp flower-making by Miss T. Trebilco. Putaruru.—The first birthday party was recently held when representatives from four other institutes were present. The president, Mrs. A. Anderson, presided. The year's points prizes were awarded as follows:—Mrs, A. Anderson, 1; Mrs. A. Applegron and Miss 0. Pollers, equal, 2. Items were given by the Rov. L. T. Nor well, Miss Norma ITeavey, Miss A. Anderson, Miss P. Heavey, Mrs. J. Parties, Mr. Barnes and Mr. A. Brown. Pukeniiro. —New members wore enrolled at the last meeting. Competition results were as follows:—Darning: Mrs. Liddle, 1; Mrs. Robinson, 2; Mrs. Shearer, 3. Dried apricot jam: Mrs. Drinnan, 1; Mrs. Kennedy, 2; Mrs. Shearer, 3. A demonstration of paper lamp shade-making was given by Mrs. B. Yates, assisted by Mrs. Tollan. Competitions were won by Miss Hillier and Mrs, Tollan. Motumaoho.—Two new members were enrolled at the last meeting. Mrs. Lcnnan was appointed link correspondent. A talk on "Jersey" was giveii, by Mrs. Gallichan, of Morrinsville. Competition entries, comprising jars of jam and children's garments, .were sent to the Campbell Johnson ward at the Hamilton Hospital. Waitorimu-Matahura.—A talk on "Tahiti" was given by Mrs. Cousins. Mrs. lies' resignation from the position of secretary was accepted with regret. Mrs. Newton was appointed in her place and Mrs. J. Grundy was elected to (ill a vacancy on the committee. The competition was won by Mrs. J. Grundy with Mrs. J. Storey second. Waerenga.—Mrs. W. A. Jofl'erios presided at. tho last meeting, when several new members were welcomed. A demonstration of the making of shells into flowers was given by Mrs. W. Keith. A competition for an iced birthday cake was won by Mrs. A. B. Carlcv and tho points prize for savouries was won bv Mrs. C. Storey. Whakatane.—Mrs. Armstrong presided at tho last meeting, and Mrs. Hyde and Mrs. Sisain were elected delegates to the bi-annual council meeting, l/olk-daneing was performed by a team of school girls. Competitions were for Madeira cako and home-made soap.
