CHALLENGE SHIELD RETAINED BY AUCKLAND POVERTY BAY DEFEATED The Romucra hockey grounds were in ideal condition on Saturday when a large programme of hockey matches was completed. In the principal attraction Poverty Bay just failed to beat Auckland for tho New Zealand Challenge Shield, while the Auckland junior representatives fought out a drawn game with Rodney, co-holders of the Country Week trophies. Tho first series of tho Dcvonport Shield games for local clubs was also-decided, when University and Somervillo played a drawn game, while St. Luke's iust managed to defeat a weak Grammar Old Boys' side. Papatootoe proved too good for Y.M.C.A. The results were as follows: Representative Games. Auckland, 5, Poverty Bay, 4; Auckland juniors, 4, Rodney, 4. Club Games. —Somerville, 2, University, 2; St. Luke's, 2, Grammar Old Boys, 1; Papatoetoe, 3, Y.M.C.A., 0. REPRESENTATIVE MATCH AUCKLAND SUCCESSFUL In a fast contest Auckland, holders of tho Now Zealand Challenge Shield, just managed to withstand a strong challenge from tho Poverty Bay representatives. Tho standard of play was good, particularly in the first half. Brilliant stick work and clean hitting produced spectacular moves by both sides. The Auckland players woro rnoro consistent throughout the gamo. Tho visiting team played exceptional hockey in tho first spell, but fell away badly after tho interval, oxcept for spasmodic attacks. Poverty Bay attacked early and Slade scored with a fine anglo shot. Clover play by the Auckland forwards took tho ball to tho other end, but Lowo soon put his forwards on attack again and with a fine piece of stick work Watchman easily beat Waltatn to register Poverty Bay's second goal. Twigden won a penalty bully for Auckland, but missed the goal and Oxham, in tho Poverty Bay goal, was called upon to savo several more shots by Auckland. Wellbourno centred splendidly and though tho ball beat both tho opposing backs, Armstrong secured possession on tho right wing and netted a fino goal. Braithwaite equalised the scores, following a meleo. However, beforo half-timo Slade again scored for Poverty Bay as the result of a bad miskick by Wattam. Poverty Bay, 3, Auckland, 2. On resuming, Poverty Bay failed to reproduce the clever stick work of tho first half. The forwards frequently lacked support and many clearing snots wero ineffective. Following a central attack Twigden broke past Scholium and Huerton, and a miskick by Oxbrow saw tho ball roll across the line. Lawry continued to keep his forwards on attack and Armstrong and Wellbourno were seen in clever runs down each wing. Braithwaite received a pass from Wcllbourne, but his shot from tho circle edge wont astray. The same player, however, soon nfterward added to Auckland's score. Armstrong was the next to score with an acute anglo shot from well out. Poverty Bay nttackcd when Watchman: raced away, but an' infringement spoilt an excellent opportunity.. Wellbourno again carried play to tho opposite end with clever stick work, Nicol clearing. From a free-hit on the circle edgo Twigden shot,, but Oxbrow kicked clear. Poverty Bay retaliated and Watchman broke through tho Auckland defence to record the final score: Auckland, 5, Poverty Bay, 4. Messrs. E. Hewitt and W. Grace wero the umpires.

AUCKLAND JUNIORS

DRAWN GAME WITH RODNEY The Auckland junior representatives played well in -their second match of tho season to draw with Rodney. Like other country teams, Rodney was- handicapped by lack of combined practice, but play was very even throughout. Cowperthwaito, on the Auckland right wing, was playing a dashing game, although as a lino the forwards lacked real combination. Cullen opened Auckland's score and Cowperthwaito immediately afterward added another. Before half-time, however. Grimmer and A. Langridge had netted for Rodney, making the scoro at tho interval: Rodney, 2, Auckland juniors, 2. On resuming, both sides in turn attacked, but the backs were clearing effectively. Sale, in tho Auckland goal, was spectacular with several fine clearing kicks. From a corner, Wilson put Auckland in the lead with a hard shot. Down the field raced Rodney and with clever stick work Grimmer beat Sale to not. A fow minutes later the same player added another goal. With tho gamo almost over the Auckland right wing sent across a nice centre from which Mackay beat Meiklejohn, and the gamo ended: Rodney, 4, Auckland juniors, 4. ' \ Messrs. H. Skinner and M.'Vipond were the umpires. SOMERVILLE LAPSES DRAW WITH UNIVERSITY Somerville and University had to play with reorganised teams in their gamo on Saturday, and with 20-minute spells tho pace was fast, Bomorvillo, which should havo won, had the better of tho first half, with Watts playing an outstanding game in the forwards. University lacked penetration in its early attacks, while tho half line failed to lend support. After tho interval, however, with a slight reorganisation, the team played much better. Somerville hold an early lead of two goals, gained by Watts. Roughton, on tho right wing, was also prominent with clever runs Just heforo half-timo Broun netted for University. Somerville, 2; University, 1. The second spell saw tho students play much bettor, with Cooper and Yule always dangerous. Broun" scored following a central attack, and the game ended in a draw— Somerville, Q: University. 2. Messrs. H. Watts and Peace wcro the umpires. ST. LUKE'S WINS GRAMMAR JUST BEATEN Both St. Luke's and Grammar were weakened thrjugh the inclusion of a number of lower-grade players, but the match was keen and interesting. Grammar put up a good showing, in spite of tho absence of five of its senior men. All tho junior players, however, performed creditably. Tho first half was very oven. Carroll opened St. Luko's scoro when Anderson kicked ovor an easy shot and tho ball rolled across tho goallino. Grammar retaliated with a nice movement, when Nicholson passed to Jerram, who, after beating King, centred for Daro lo not. After tho interval the Grammar defence weakened and St. Luko's forwards swarmed down for Corin to scoro, tho game ending:— St. Luko's, 2; Grammar. 1. Messrs. G. Wells and G. Gutry wcro tho umpires. A PATCHY GAME PAPATOETOE BEATS Y.M.C.A. In a very scrappy contest, with only glimpses of combined play, Papatoetoo had little difficulty in defeating Y.M.C.A. Papatoetoo played with better understanding than its opponents. Y.M.C.A. as a whole did not display much enthusiasm in its gamo Tho forwards failed to combine, while tho half lino gave little support. Papatootoo's bettor stickwork in tho circlo was porhaps the chief asset. Smythoman opened tho scoring from a moleo, and tho second goal bofore half-timo was added by Torbett, who went straight down tho centre of tho field to beat Campbell. On resuming Panatoetoo could only add one moro goal, when Smythoman again netted following a central attack. I Papatoetoo, 3; Y.M.C.A., 0. Messrs. McLean and Lipanovich woro tho umpires.
