EVENTS IN AUCKLAND ideal conditions prevail maungakiekie championship Conditions for golf were again ideal on Saturday, when competitions were held by the various local clubs. Tho first qualifying round of tho Maungakiekie Club's championship did not produce any very low scores, J. C. Polhani heading the list with a 75. J. Earle was noxt and G. H. Philson and B. Aley were the respective leaders of the intermediate and junior grades. Only one player was equal to his handicap in a bogey match at Middlemore. With a card of 1 up, A. S. Gray was the winner, and V. E. Masters, 1 down, was noxt. A pairs aggregate Stableford bogey event at Akaran.a resulted in a win for M. Jaques and J. Deane, whilo «T. S. Wiseman and W. H. Neholf were tho runners-up. The scoring at Titirangi w&s verv even and in the first of three medal rounds for tho Self Cup, A. B. Jacob led the field with a 72 net. The faext best were N. C. McLean, J. C. Wilson and F. A. Browne. In tho play-off for the gold buttons at Pupuke, the winner was W. J. Thompson and he was followed by H H. Craig and 11. Durham. A inedai competition was won by M. Grant and matches in the Pupuke Cup and captain's prize events wore continued. Tho final round of the Howey Walker Cup was played at Glendowie, S. Keys being the winner. J. Cleghorn, after tieing with G. Ff.rrant, was successful in a bogey match at Orakei. RETIREMENT OF PROFESSIONAL After being' retained as professional to tho Titirangi Golf Club for seven years, C. TV. Woodroffo haa decided to pro Into tho engineering: business. Since steel-shafted clubs wero legalised, a professional has been forced to dopend almost solely on coaching in order to make a living, and tho profession is not so attractive ns was tho caso a few years ago. Woodroffe commenced his golfing career about 14 years ago. when ho was a member of the Otahuhu Club. He served his apprenticeship under E. J. Jloss at Middlemore and, although he hai not played a great deal of competitive golf since being at Titirangi, he has met with success in open day tournaments. PLAYER HOLES IN ONE - Playing in a foar-ball best-ball competition at tho Akarana links during tho week-end, M. Jaques, a member of the Akarana Golf Club, holed his teo shot at the 16th, a distance of 155 yards.
