FIRE AT POST OFFICE

CHRISTCHURCH EXCITEMENT SMALL OUTBREAK IN ROOF [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday More excitement than damage was caused by a fire which broke out in tho roof of the Chief Post Office, Cathedral Square, at about 1.30 p.m. to-day. A huge crowd immediately collected. Tho first' indications were light clouds of smoke issuing from the gable at tho southern end of the building on tho frontage facing tho Cathedral. Tho actual fire, which was very slight, was in tho roof some sft. or 6ft. from the guttering.

Tho fire brigade rushed two engines to tho sceno. An extension ladder was run up from tho pavement and, after a liolo 2ft. or 3ft. across had been hacked in tho slnto roof, tho firo was put out. No definite cause for tho fire has been found, but it is bolioved it may have boon started by a largo spark from a chimney near by.
