CITY MILK PRICES

PRESENT COMPLEX SYSTEM NEED FOR CONSOLIDATION The view that a general consolidation of milk prices was needed to replace the present complex system was expressed by Mr. 11. S. Smith when suggesting at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council that certain alterations should be made in the schedule of prices for shipping milk in order to bring shipping under the council's ordinary quantity price fixation. Mr. Smith said that since the fixation of prices for shipping milk a number of anomalies had been discovjered, and he considered it would be far better if a general consolidation was completed by the council's solicitors. The chairman, Mr. 1.. J. Goldstine. supported this opinion, and suggested that the council should instruct the secretary to have the whole list of prices drawn up in proper consolidated form by the solicitors for submission to the next meeting of the council. "We have to have a consolidated form of prices," said Mr. Goldstine. "It is far better to have the prices properly consolidated so that there will be no misapprehension as to when a particular, price was fixed. If we agree to consolidate all prices one resolution can be passed on a specific day, and there .will be no difficulty. It js only fair to the trade to have the whole thing drawn up in consolidated form."^ The council adopted a resolution on these lines.

FRUIT CULTIVATION REVOLUTIONARY METHODS DEMONSTRATION AT HENDERSON New and revolutionary methods of pruning fruit trees, which are stated to have brought about increased fruitfulness and earlier maturity, have been developed by a Hawke's Bay orchardist, Mr. Vincent Caccioppoli. The scheme is claimed to be fully effective in the case of citrus trees, and arrangements have been made for Mr. Caccioppoli to givo tv public demonstration of the scheme at the citrus grove of Dr. R. H. Makgill, Lincoln Road, Henderson, at 10 o'clock on Monday morning. Arriving in New Zealand from Italy about 30 years ago, Mr. Caccioppoli ajened a market garden at Pctane, awke's Bay, before taking up orchard work at Loiiglands in the same district. About seven years ago lie devised improvements to the present system of cultivation and, in the following year, ho conducted experiments with drastic pruning of an unorthodox type on a group of trees. Success is claimed for the methods lie introduced and it' is stated that crops have been materially increased, one young orchard planted six years ago now carrying 10 bushels to the treo. During a holiday in Auckland, Mr. Caccioppoli has given demonstrations at a- number of orchards adjoining Auckland, and tho methods which lie intends to explain on Monday include planting, pruning, root pruning, the renovation of old trees and other general points of cultivation.
