The ingenuity of Automotive Engineers has again been demons atrated by new instruments which have just come to haqa. These instruments accomplish what it has previously been impossible to do in Checking the electrical system of a car. By means of our new Electrical Check it is now possible to check for overload, voltage losses, loose connections, short circuits and the other starting system defects which so easily occur, without removing any part of the starting system from the car. This new test is even more accurate and complete because it is made under actual load conditions. When any part of the electrical system, battery, cables, starting motor, generator, distributor, lights or accessories are not functioning properly, the result is hard starting, or no starting at all. McKlnnon, M.1.K.H., Chief Engineer to E.vlcle. lias written at length and on innumerable occasions, with endeavour to eradicate tlie fallacy about batteries being- hurt by very high discharge rates. He asserts Hint a momentary dead short across the battery terminals does no harm at all, and certainly does not alTect the useful life or the plates. Motorists court battery troubles, lie asserts, not by lilgli discharge rates, but by draining- the battery to exhaustion with no adequate means of promptly charging Hie battery. Ir. Tor Instance, he says, the side and tall lamps or a particular light ear are left on for parking-, the drain on the battery would be 2 ampere hours per hour, which with the battery standardised for that car would lead to complete exluuisllon . in 284 hours.
