CAR'S PLUNGE OVER BANK ERRATIC COURSE ON ROAD [BY TELECRArH —OWN correspondent"] THAMES, Friday A verdict that Charles Manu, a middle-age Maori, was accidentally killed when the car ho was driving went over a 20ft. bank into the sea near Tapu, on August 20, was returned today by the coroner, Mr. W. Bongard. Evidence showed that the car was found by a passing motorist at the foot of the bank. Deceased was pinned down with his head partially submerged by the rising tide. One witness said that it was quite possible for the man to have been drowned. The police stated that" the man's collarbone was broken and that he had received other injuries. A witness gave evidence that the deceased called on him about 4.30 p.m., asking for employment, and he was told to report at Waihi. The man smelled strongly of drink, and witness did not think he was capable of driving the car. The coroner inspected the brakes of the damaged car, as it was alleged they were defective, but no defect was found. The police stated that the tracks of deceased's car on the road showed he had been very erratic in his steering.
