NEW POST OFFICE

WAIMANA BUILDING OPENED [from our own correspondent] "WHAKATANE, Thursday Some 250 residents of Waimana and the district gathered at the township when the new Waimana post office, built at a cost of £2789, was opened by Mr. C. H. Burnett, M.P., who traced the history of the settlement of the district and its gradual improvement in postal facilities. Other speakers included Mr. R. Fleming, riding member of the Whakatane County Council, who presided, Mr. Walter Reid, chairman of the Whakatane County Council. Mr. J. Arres, deputy-mayor of Whakatane, the Hon. J. B. Gow, Mr. A. M. Robertson, chief postmaster at Gisborne, Mr. Garlick, an early mail contractor and Mr. J. Mitchell, one of the original settlers. Maori greetings were also given by Tu Rakuraku and To Paire terangi, of the Tuhoe tribe. After the formal opening the ladies of tbe district provided afternoon tea, and a well-attended dance was held at night. INVERCARGILL CONTRACT TENDER ACCEPTED FOR £74,000 [by telegraph—own correspondent! DUNEDIN, Thursday Work will bo commenced within three weeks on Invercargill's new post office, the successful tender being that of William McLellan, Limited, Dunedin. The amount of the tender is in the vicinity of £74,000. The same firm is at present engaged in the construction of tbe new State Fire Office at Invercargill.
