DOMAIN PLAN

APPROVAL BY COUNCIL NEW DRIVE OPPOSED WORK TO PROCEED "This will not be a through - traffic road and it* can have nothing to do with traffic to Newmarket," snid the deputy-Mayor, the Hon. B. Martin, M.L.C., who presided at the meeting of the City Council last night when it agreed to the recommendations of the Town Planning Committee that the general principle of the plan for the future development of the Domain should he adopted. When the recommendations of the committee, which were published in the Herald on Wednesday, were put forward for adoption, Miss E. Melville moved as an amendment that clause C of the recommendations, which provided for the layout of the proposed aboreturn on the paddock below the hospital and the grading and grassing of the route of the new drive, be referred back to the committee. She spoke of the possibility of the drive becoming a through route for traffic between Stanley Street and Newmarket and suggested that all that was required to serve the aboretum would be properly placed pedestrian paths. Miss Melville was supported by Mr. J. L, Coakley. It was pointed out by the Hon. T. Bloodworth, M.L.C., a member, of the committee, that a large area such as the aboretum could not be developed without access roads. The opinion of the committee was that the road would not be necessary immediately, but would be required as the area developed. It had therefore been decided to form the road now rather than disturb the surroundings later when the trees had grown. Under this plan the council was undertaking the development of the Domain in the proper sequense and it could be left to the good sense of future councils whether the road would become a traffic artery. Miss Melville's amendment was lost and the recommendations were adopted. Miss Melville and Mr. Coakley asked that their votes be recorded against the adoption of the recommendations.
