THE LEAGUE CODE

REPRESENTATIVE TRIAL MATCH AT CARLAW PARK CONDITIONS HAMPER PLAYERS The trial game played at Carlaw Park yesterday afternoon with a view to assisting the selectors to choose a New Zealand team to play tho Australians early next month, proved somewhat disappointing inasmuch that tho ground conditions, which wore particularly heavy, did not allow the players to do themselves justice. The Possibles team deleated tho Probables by 25 points to 11.

Tho Possibles team, which included all Auckland players, had an advantage in tho scrums and its hacks in the first half had much the better of the game. Play, however, was more even in tho second half, when tho selectors interchanged several players in both teams. Tho only now player tried was Anderson, of Marist. llemi and Kay, two of Auckland's outstanding backs, and Perry, Wellington, wero forced to retiro owing to injuries. Bickerton's Fine Display A feature of tho gamo was tho splendid play of Bickerton, at five-eighths for the Possibles, and .Rata on the wing. Tho former made soino nice openings and was easily tho best of the inside backs. .Opposed to Bickerton and Tittleton were tho two Chase brothers, who played good football, even after being changed over to tho Probables team. R. Chase, who scored three tries, made a good impression. His brother, T. Chase, did an amount of good work on defence, but he was overshadowed by Bickerton. Among the southern players, Davison, tho Christehurch wing-threequarter, was easily (lie best back and must havo strong claims for selection in tho New Zealand team. Ho is a great goal-kicker and ho had more speed than any other wing taking part in tho match. Kiely, the centre-threequarter from West Coast, did not receive many opportunities, but was prominent in tho second half. Bevan, on tho wing, was overshadowed by Rata, but tho former was rarely given chances on attack. Rata scored a clever try and enhanced his chances of selection. Behind tho scrum, Halloran was a better player on tho day than Mahinia. Tho former has played at fiveeighths all the season, but yesterday ho did a lot of clever work behind the scrum. However, Mahima has proved tho outstanding halfback in club football and may yet bo thi! test player. Good Work in the Loose Of the' forwards, Glynn, West Coast, played a good game, being prominent in, tho loose besides doing good work in tho scrum. Telford, the front row forward, showed up well, as did Breed, who was a tireless worker in the looso. The best forward in tho loose was Mataira, who showed great versatility. He played well in the back row of the Probables' scrum, and, after changing over, stood out as the best forward for tho Possibles. Gault inado a good Impression and has strong claims for a position in the front row. Of the two Wellington forwards Cootcs was easily tho best. However, he spoiled a good display by hanging on to the ball too long. Morgan, Broderick and Watene, the lastnamed playing both in the forwards and at fullback, appear certain to secure selection against the Australians. Tho team will bo chosen on Saturday evening and tho players will have a week's training prior to meeting tho Australians in the first icst at Carlaw Park on Saturday week.
