TEOOPS IN FAR EAST CHINESE AND JAPANESE MANOEUVRES END SERIOUSLY By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received July S, 5.5 p.m.) TOKIO, July S According to Japanese reports from Peking, a battalion of General Sun Cheh-yuan's 29th Route. Army clashed at midnight with a battalion of Japanese troops, who were carrying out night manoeuvres. The incident occurred in the neighbourhood of Fengtai, whither both sides rushed for reinforcements. A severe engagement is reported to be in progress.
BRIEF ARMISTICE SUBSEQUENT BREAKDOWN CHINESE BEING DISARMED (Received July 9, 12.45 a.m.) PEKING, July 8 The Nanking Government ordered the localisation of the Fengtai incident and an armistice was declared until 10 a.m. Later it was extended to noon, but broke down owing to the non-with-drawal of the Chinese troops, whom the Japanese are now disarming in addition to occupying Lungwangmaio. The Chinese casualties are estimated at 200 and the Japanese at 10. The Chinese explain that the trouble arose through their mistaking the Japanese for bandits who recently have been terrorising Lungwangmaio. Where the clash occurred is 20 miles from Peking.
