THE PLACEMENT SERVICE
Sir, —In view of the insinuations made by a correspondent under the pseudonym of "Daylight" alleging the display of a dictatorial attitude and unfairness on the part of the Placement Service, I feel that some reply in defence of that splendid organisation is warranted. As one who has personally made contact with the officers of this service. 1 feci that no praise is too high for the efficiency in evidence, and for ,the extreme tolerance and civility that is accorded applicants. Your correspondent's time would be better occupied if instead of offering destructive criticism he submitted that of a creative nature. His statement that employers arc practically compelled to accept the men that arc nominated, irrespective of qualifications, and that through fear of losing sustenance payments those nominees have no choice' but to accept that which is offered without regard to suitability, is decidedly contrary to fact. My own experience is a direct contradiction ot the imputations made by this correspondent. Being unemployed I applied for assistance and was directed to the Placement Office. My first impression was of the sincere desire of the officers to secure for me some suitable employment consistent with m.v qualifications. This enthusiasm did not wane, when two positions were submitted and were not acceptable and rejected by me. Within three weeks of registration I was again nominated with several other applicants to interview two prospective employers and in spite of this competition, which "Daviight" alleges does not exist, I was the successful applicant in both cases. Needless to say I chose the_ most suitable position and am now enjoying the benefit of permanent employment. The fact that the Placement Service is beginning to enjoy greater popularity with reputable employers is surely indicative of satisfaction and confidence. Grateful.
