PURCHASE OF NEW TUG

LYTTELTON HARBOUR BOARD SIMILAR TO AUCKLAND CRAFT The Lyttelton Harbour Board has decided to purchase a new tug. Messrs. H. Mitchell and Company, of New-castle-on-Tyne, well-known naval architects, are to be invited to submit to the board plans and specifications for a vessel similar to that built for tho Auckland Harbour Board. In March the acting-harbourmaster, Captain J. Plowman, suggested tho purchase of a new and more powerful tug, and this week the engineer, Mr. P. W. Fryer, reported on tho proposal. Ho submitted particulars of the Auckland tug, which, he said, was not fitted with fire and salvage gear, with which ho asked that the board's new vessel be equipped. The board agreed that the tug Lyttelton was not sufficiently powerful for the harbour's requirements, and instructed the secretary, Mr. C. H. Clibborn, to use the air mail to secure early plans from the designers. When the board was asked to decide the future of the present tug at Lyttelton, it preferred to leave its decision on disposal or future- use until tho arrival of tho new vessel.
