AID FOR MINE
GOVERNMENT ACTION RELIEF AT HIKURANGI UNWATERING TO BE DONE IMMEDIATE COMMENCEMENT [by telegraph—press association-] WELLINGTON, Wednesday An announcement that the Govern* meat has derided to assist the'<Hikurangi Coal Company to unwater i t 3 mine, and that the work was to pro. ceod immediately, was made by Minister of Mines, the Hon. p. q Webb, at th>- conclusion of a Cabinet meeting to-night. Kxtensiye damage has been done to the mine by at), normal Hooding in .the North Auckland district last week, and the directors of the company had announced their intention to abandon indefinitely any further attempts at mining and to salvage whatever plant was available.
Mr. Webb said that representatives of the Hikurangi Town Board, Miners' Union and the Hikurangi Coal Company had waited upon him. . and the Under-Secretary of Mines. Mr.. A. Tyndall. and the Chief Inspector ot Coal Mines. Mr, G. Duggan. and had discussed the whole question fully. Tha situation was. indeed, critical, and 40 miners would bo thrown out of work immediately. Unless the mine was un. wateied quickly additional expend would be incurred.
